Twelfth Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF12) | One UN Side Event
WUF Culture Side event

Organized on 7 November 2024 by UNESCO as part of the 12th edition of the , convened by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), this One UN side event on Culture-powered Public Spaces: Inclusivity, Growth, Resilience will explore diverse ways in which urban stakeholders – across UN agencies, from UN-Habitat to OHCHR and FAO – are leveraging cultural assets for inclusive, prosperous and resilient public spaces. Culture-based initiatives from around the world are breaking new ground in the urban sphere – from design for eco-friendly solutions and urban regeneration, to creative mobility, cultural events, and art in the public space. Public spaces are also serving as creative platforms for artists to express their creativity and raise awareness about societal issues. Culture-embedded public spaces provide multiple opportunities for everyone to utilize them, engage in decision-making processes, and share in their benefits.

As the only UN agency with a global mandate in culture, UNESCO is federating its broad network of partners and practitioners to share knowledge and build evidence on the multiple ways in which culture and creativity contribute to ensuring inclusive and pluralistic public spaces. Supporting locally-based economic patterns that respond to the needs of communities is key to this aspiration. This side event equally contributes to the global reflection on the recognition of culture as a standalone goal in the post-2030 development agenda, following the  and the UNESCO World Conference on Cultural Policies and Sustainable Development – MONDIACULT 2025
