UNESCO celebrates the power of young people on World Cities Day 2024
This year’s World Cities Day acknowledges the role of young people in bringing innovative solutions to climate challenges and promoting resilience and sustainability of urban areas. Cities around the world explore how the youth can contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at a local level, primarily Goal 11 on Sustainable Cities and Goal 13 on Climate Action. It echoes UNESCO’s long-standing commitment to unlocking the potential of the youth population, recognized as a priority group.
Cities offer a platform for positive societal changes, providing tangible and sustainable means to tackle contemporary challenges. As Audrey Azoulay, the Director-General of UNESCO, said in her message for World Cities Day 2024, “True laboratories of innovation, cities are also the site of major environmental challenges.”
Created in 2019, the UNESCO Cities Platform encourages the participation of diverse stakeholders in urban development policies and strategies. Through the Platform, UNESCO stimulates city-focused discussions through a wide array of activities and projects, including active exchanges between cities to share success stories and lessons learned. The Day marks the conclusion of a year dedicated to empowering young people to imagine sustainable and climate-resilient cities, instilling in them a sense of ownership and responsibility for present and future generations.
Building on the various celebrations of World Cities Day and , the UNESCO Cities Platform will join the World Urban Forum, to be held in Cairo, Egypt from 4 to 8 November. UNESCO will advocate for ‘local actions for a global impact’, to build the inclusive and creative cities of tomorrow.
