Chile chaired the UNESCO plenary of the High-Level Steering Committee for Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Education)
The meeting, titled "Accelerating Action Towards SDG 4: Taking Stock of the Transforming Education Summit" aimed to assess progress towards SDG 4 by reviewing advancements and commitments made by countries at the 2022 Education Transformation Summit, exploring innovative mechanisms for education financing, and influencing the negotiations of the United Nations' Pact for the Future to ensure education remains a cross-cutting element across all its pillars.
鈥淭his High-Level Steering Committee is the leading platform for global cooperation in education. It is a technical and political committee that urges us to mobilise at the highest level to make education accessible to all, while also ensuring it is more aligned with today鈥檚 world,鈥 stated UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay. She added, 鈥淭he data we regularly produce shows us that much remains to be done. Despite the progress of recent decades, 250 million children and young people are still out of school.鈥
Chilean President Gabriel Boric remarked, 鈥淥nly together can we transform education into an effective tool for human development and societal progress. We have taken on this task with great responsibility, aware that, with UNESCO, we are driving a global process with a short and unavoidable timeframe. To meet it, it is crucial to establish clear guidelines, monitor progress, and share best practices. No country can tackle the challenge of transforming its educational systems alone; we must learn from each other, openly sharing our successes and failures.鈥
SDG 4 is the only one of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals with its own monitoring mechanism. It is composed of 28 members: 12 ministers of education (including representatives from France, Brazil, China, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia), 6 international organisations such as the World Bank, the European Union, and the OECD, and 8 representatives from the private and educational sectors.
