Art Education Week (SEA) 2024
Chile has been celebrating Art Education Week since 2013. Initially, all activities were concentrated into a single week of celebration. However, in recent years, it has evolved into an extended process that begins in May and continues throughout the rest of the year.
The Week is aimed at school-aged children and young people, focusing on an educational stage where the development of the arts and creativity allows for the learning of various expressive languages, fostering individuals who are more free and aware of their surroundings.
After ten years of development in Chile, thousands of institutions have incorporated Art Education Week into their calendars and have actively participated in a sustained growth that underscores the importance of the arts in building a comprehensive and high-quality educational model.
Actividades 2024
For its twelfth edition, from 13th to 19th May, Art Education Week (SEA) will have the theme "Sharing the Joy of Creating." The invitation is to celebrate collective creation, develop experiences that promote sensitive and supportive communities, and contribute to generating environments of empathy and collaboration. This continues the biennial cycle, which began in 2023, focused on the contributions of the arts to coexistence and the strengthening of community bonds.
In 2024, SEA will highlight the work of four teachers who have made significant contributions to the art education of children and young people in Chile: Dora 脕guila (Metropolitan Region), a professor of art didactics for many generations of teachers and the creator of Educarte; Olivia Concha (Coquimbo Region), a music teacher who has trained many educators, especially early childhood educators; Am茅rico Giusti (Biob铆o Region), an orchestra conductor and founder of the Curanilahue High School Orchestra; and Joel Maripil (Araucan铆a Region), a Lafkenche educator and cultural advocate.
The central event of SEA 2024 will be the International Meeting on Education, Art, and Culture, held from 14th to 16th May at the Gabriela Mistral Cultural Centre (GAM). This event will showcase national and international experiences across four thematic panels: "The Relevance of the Arts in Educational Projects," "Characteristics of Early Artistic Education In and With the Arts," "Situated Art Education Experiences," and "Collaboration Networks and Sustainability." Additionally, there will be sessions on experiences, workshops, and activities for a broad audience, especially children, in GAM Plaza, emphasizing the importance of art in public spaces. The event will close with a concert by the FOJI Percussion Ensemble.
Joining SEA 2024, on Saturdays 18th and 25th May, from 7:00 to 14:00, Uchile TV will air a special programme on Art Education, available for free on national broadcast television.
As part of Art Education Week, Balmaceda Arte Joven (BAJ), Rock al Patio, and Teatro Nescaf茅 de las Artes will celebrate with the event Encuentro Arte al Patio: Can Art Transform Education? on 24th May at 10:30 a.m. at Teatro Nescaf茅 de las Artes. This event will feature musical performances by prominent artists alongside talented school bands, as well as panels and discussions. A few days later, on 4th June, BAJ will launch two digital publications exploring its model of artistic education.
Additionally, the Undersecretariat of Early Childhood Education of the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Subdirectorate of Museums, will hold the IV Seminar on Art, Heritage, and Childhood on 6th June at the Benjam铆n Vicu帽a Mackenna Museum. Also joining SEA 2024, the University of Chile, through its Vice-Rector's Office for Research and Development and its Directorate of Artistic Creation (DiCREA), will host the VI Seminar on Research in Arts and Education on 18th July at the university's main campus.
