Last update:24 May 2023

Caçapava UNESCO Global Geopark is located in the southernmost part of Brazil, within the administrative boundaries of the municipality of Caçapava do Sul. The unique physical and natural features of the territory make it an important site for investigation and teaching for a number of Brazilian universities and research groups. The geopark's mineral resources have played a crucial role in the economic development of the region, with sulfide metals and marble being mined for lime/cement products.

Celebrating Earth heritage

The geology of the Caçapava UNESCO Global Geopark is characterized by the Ediacaran to Cambrian, volcano-sedimentary deposits of the ‘Camaquã basin', which provide a complete and well-exposed record of the transition stage of the South American Platform between 600 and 500 Ma. Several geosites within the geopark, including Serra do Segredo, Guaritas, and Minas do Camaquã, have been recognized as of international significance by various surveys. Additionally, these geosites are world-class examples and promising study areas in the field of geomorphology, particularly in cavernous weathering research. The sedimentary hills and ranges of the Caçapava UNESCO Global Geopark are also of unique ecological importance, hosting a diverse range of endemic species of cacti, native flowers, and bees.

Sustaining local communities

Caçapava UNESCO Global Geopark places a strong emphasis on the value and attention to be given to the populations of indigenous guarani people, quilombola communities, and family-based cattle ranchers – three traditional groups of settlers in the Southern Brazilian Pampa. The geopark is also a hub for outdoor sports such as rock climbing and free flight, and offers an unpolluted, dark night sky for stargazing. The region is also famous for its olive groves and high-quality olive oil.
