Today
The event Climate vulnerability and water resilience in Small Islands Developing States (SIDS) will take place from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m, online. Organized by the Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP) in collaboration with the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Unit of UNESCO and the University of Southampton, this event will provide the opportunity for synergies between academics, professionals, and decision makers in the water sector to discuss about the vulnerabilities to hydroclimatic hazards in SIDS and explore pathways to resilience. Additionally, it will contribute to develop an implementation plan for climate adaptation in SIDS within the framework of the IHP IX (2022-2029) 鈥淪cience for a Water Secure World in a Changing Environment鈥. It will also enhance UNESCO鈥檚 contribution to the SAMOA Pathway and support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDGs 6 (water) and 13 (climate action) as well as the Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction.
The event South-South Cooperation Initiative on Freedom of Expression, Access to Information and Safety of Journalists for Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa, will take place from 1:00 to 1:30 p.m in Room X. It will highlight the activities that will be implemented in 2022 under the framework of the South-South cooperation strategy developed with the Brazilian National School of Judges, the Permanent Delegation of Brazil to UNESCO, and the CI Sector, to support judicial actors from Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa in strengthening their capacities on freedom of expression, access to information and the safety of journalists鈥 international and regional standards. The Director-General will be present, along with H.E. Mr Santiago Irazabal Mour茫o, Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Brazil to UNESCO, Minister Og Fernandes, Director of the Brazilian National Schools of Judges and the Permanent Delegates of the Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa.

The 2020 was awarded to Prof. Kenya Honda from Keio University in Japan, who joined online and was interviewed during the event. During the ceremony, a round table discussion was also held with the laureate and two other eminent scientists from Cuba and Pakistan, to discuss COVID-19 and the vaccine. The event was attended by H.E. Yahima Esquivel Moynelo, Ambassador of Cuba to UNESCO, Mr Yasushi Taguchi, SecretaryGeneral of the Japanese National Commission and ADG of the Natural Sciences Sector. More than 20 delegations participated in the ceremony. This prize inspires individuals, governments, and NGOs to support research in the field of microbiology.
The official launch of the event was designed to accelerate the COVID-19 recovery and enhance the well-being of youth through smart investments in sport as a driver of health, education and equality outcomes from policy to practice. This event presented a unique opportunity to learn about the planned activities within 鈥淔it for Life鈥, as well as emergent findings from UNESCO鈥檚 survey on quality physical education. Representatives of Member States, athletes, young leaders and high-level personalities were invited to provide testimonials on the power of sport and to engage in a series of panel discussions. The Award Ceremony of the 2021 edition of the UNESCO-Russia Mendeleev International Prize in the Basic Sciences was awarded to Professor Vincenzo Balzani (Italy) and Professor Yuri Oganessian (Russian Federation). Professor Balzani was recognized for the lasting impact of his outstanding scientific achievements in basic chemical sciences and his career-long efforts to promote international cooperation, science education and sustainable development. Professor Oganessian was recognized for his breakthrough discoveries that extend the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements and for his promotion of the basic sciences at the global scale. The Prize is awarded annually to two individuals for their breakthrough discoveries or outstanding innovations driving, or with potential to drive, socio-economic transformation and development of human societies, and for their dedicated promotion of basic sciences.鈥2021 marks the ceremony of the first edition of the Prize.

Reviving Mosul through Culture Photo exhibition and panel discussion will take place from 11:00 to 11:15 a.m. in photo exhibition Hall des pas perdus, with a panel discussion from 11:15 to 12:30 p.m in Mir貌 Room. The event will start with a joint visit by the Minister of Culture of Iraq and UNESCO鈥檚 ADG of Culture to the photo exhibition on Mosul, which highlights the ongoing rehabilitation and reconstruction of the Old City of Mosul, followed by a panel discussion on the revival of cultural life in the city. Three experts/activists working on the advancement of cinema, theatre and music in the city of Mosul, will be discussing different aspects of revival of cultural life, practical steps taken, hopes and struggles.

鈥淚t鈥檚 about life鈥, a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB) will take place from 12:30 to 8:30 p.m. on the 7th floor in UNESCO鈥檚 restaurant. Showcasing the role of MAB in spearheading UNESCO鈥檚 strategy for biodiversity conservation and as a global leader in socially inclusive environmental management, this event will encompass a presentation of the 50th anniversary artwork by Vik Muniz; Monitoring for the Future: Delivery of drones to beneficiary countries; Intergenerational dialogue between MAB official spokespeople and the award ceremony of the UNESCO Sultan Qaboos Prize for Environmental Conservation. The celebration will be in the presence of scientists, youth representatives and artists.
The event Journalism is a public good: Presentation of the Highlights of the World Trends in Freedom of Expression and Media Development: Global Report 2021/2022 will take place from 1:15 to 2:30 p.m. in Salle XI. This event will present the highlights of the 2021/2022 global edition of the flagship series of reports on World Trends in Freedom of Expression and Media Development. Organized in collaboration with the Permanent Delegation of Sweden, the event will also include an overview of the original data-driven analysis covered in the report and will feature a high-level panel with speakers from academia, civil society, the UN, and the media sector.
The event "Leading Voices Against Racism" will take place from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Room I. With the objective of addressing the 鈥淕lobal Call against Racism鈥 launched by Member States in December 2020, this high-level event, organized by the Social and Human Sciences Sector, focuses on the crucial role of global leaders in spearheading advocacy efforts to combat racism. This initiative builds on and follows one of the key recommendations put forward by the 鈥淯NESCO Global Forum against Racism and Discrimination鈥, organized in March 2021, which kicked off UNESCO鈥檚 series of anti-racism efforts. This high-level panel will welcome H.E. Epsy Campbell Barr, Vice President of Costa Rica, H.E. Juan Jos茅 Bremer, Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Mexico, Martin Luther King III, global human rights activist and the scholar, Achille Mbembe.
The high-level event UNESCO Marine World Heritage & Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission in the framework of the Ocean Decade will take place from 1:30 to 2:50 p.m. in Room IX. UNESCO will launch a strategic roadmap that sets out the core science, resource, and capacity needs at Marine World Heritage sites in the context of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030 (鈥淭he Ocean Decade鈥). This event will showcase tangible examples of transversal cooperation among UNESCO Programmes in the field of ocean science and Marine World Heritage as well as support from key partners for flagship initiatives. It will also highlight the recently launched joint IOC-CLT global eDNA project to study vulnerability of species to climate change at Marine World Heritage sites. Furthermore, it will feature a view from the field with a testimonial from the local management authority of the Aldabra Atoll World Heritage site (Seychelles). More information on the ; ; .
