Quality Education: Key to Sustainable Development

UNESCO鈥檚 global mandate covers all aspects of education.

Our work in the Education Sector of UNESCO Beijing Office is guided by UNESCO鈥檚 eight-year Medium Term Strategy鈥檚 overarching objectives of 鈥淧eace and equitable and sustainable development鈥 and 鈥渃ontributing to sustainable development and the eradication of poverty鈥. Quality Education is key to building peace, eradicating poverty and driving sustainable development. Education is a fundamental human right all throughout life and that access must be matched by quality.

UNESCO鈥檚 education mandate covers all aspects of education. UNESCO is the custodian agency for Sustainable Development Goal 4, guided by the Education 2030 Framework for Action (FFA). 91麻豆国产精品自拍 been working in East Asian countries with leadership in education, the strengthening of education systems in the regional countries and response to contemporary sub-regional educational challenges.

Our focus areas and successful cases:

  • SDG4 Localization

 are entirely consistent with national policies and plans in East Asia. The education sector plans have been aligned with 2030 SDG strategy and UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Frameworks in China, Mongolia and DPRK. Building on the expertise in developing capacity to design and implement education policies and plans that meet countries' needs and conditions, UNESCO Beijing reviewed the Education Sector in Mongolia and contributed to the preparation of the ten-year Education Sector Master Plan. The regular monitoring of the progress of SDG4 in East Asia is on-going at the moment. In 2023, with UNESCO Beijing's technical and financial support, the Mid-term SDG 4 National Progress Reports of China, Mongolia, Japan and Republic of Korea were completed and published.

  • Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)

ESD is UNESCO鈥檚 education response to the urgent and dramatic challenges the planet faces. UNESCO Beijing contributes to ESD policy dialogue, capacity development and best practices sharing in East Asia. ESD empowers learners of all ages with the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes to address the interconnected global challenges, including climate change, environmental degradation, loss of biodiversity, poverty and inequality. In Mach 2023, over 100 participants from East and Southeast Asia region participated in the ESD Regional Consultation to review progress made in the implementation of ESD for 2030 Framework, Greening Education Initiative, ESD-Net   and   ESD  for   2030   Country Initiative. In Mongolia, a Japanese Funds-in-Trust (JFIT) pilot project on ESD2030 was launched in 2021 to assess the status and strengthen ESD at all levels. In Japan, the government approved ESD as a national Policy to implement at all levels of the education system. ESD theme and activities were promoted in over 1,500 ASPnet schools in the region. ESD is recognized as an integral element of SDG 4 on quality education and a key enabler of all other SDGs. Over 1000 ESD experts and youth were trained in East Asian countries. Over 200 experts participated in the United Nations University (UNU) Regional ESD Centres of Expertise.

TVET is critical to socio-economic development, connecting education and the world of work. UNESCO Beijing supports countries in East Asia in quality TVET systems that address economic, social and environmental demands by helping youth and adults develop skills they need for employment, decent work and entrepreneurship. UNESCO Beijing partnered with ICHEI and universities to advance the digitalization of countries in East Asia. The TVET Sector Policy Review in Mongolia was critical in advancing the TVET Sector to satisfy the needs of the labour market. UNESCO Beijing also facilitated policy dialogue and knowledge sharing of TVET best practices through the UNEVOC Centres, with engagement of over 500 TVET experts. 3 new UNEVOC Centres were established in Mongolia.
