Built and Natural Heritage
Built and natural heritage is the fundamental expression of the culture of a community, of its relationship with its territory and, at the same time, the expression of the world’s cultural diversity. In emergency contexts, regardless of natural or human-induced disasters, built and natural heritage is vulnerable to deliberate and involuntary destruction and thus requires interdisciplinary approaches for risk reduction, crisis response, as well as post-crisis reconciliation and recovery.
The protection of built and natural heritage requires specific skills and knowledge which UNESCO training tools address to provide relevant stakeholders with the necessary capacities, notably to develop disaster risk management plans and to put in place emergency protocols in an emergency, for example for structural stabilization. Tools developed by UNESCO increase experts’ awareness to adopt safeguarding measures for cultural property and assist them in their implementation.
