Young people from the Caribbean are trained in sound editing in Cuba with the support of UNESCO and the EU
On 21 June 2024, the official inauguration of the new round of face-to-face courses at the Caribbean Cultural Training Hub took place, promoted by the UNESCO programme Transcultura: Integrating Cuba, the Caribbean and the European Union through Culture and Creativity, funded by the European Union, to further strengthen the professionalisation of the cultural and creative sectors in the Caribbean.
In this round, the programme has granted 24 scholarships to students between 18 and 35 years of age, from Barbados, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and Cuba, to be trained in sound editing and soundtrack design at the International Film and Television School of San Antonio de los Baños, a Hub member institution.
Transcultura brings people together, empowering and equipping them with all the tools and skills they can use to support the development of our vibrant Caribbean culture.
The courses, which began on 17 June and will come to an end on 28 June, are delivered in Spanish, with simultaneous interpretation into English and French. During the training the students will have the opportunity to use sound studios fully renovated with the support of Transcultura.
Culture is essential for achieving an integration project. In this regard, EICTV contributes to this integrated outlook, as well as to the Transcultura programme, given its search for diversity and elements shared in common.
The programme, since its inception in 2020, has delivered 20 tons of materials and equipment to the Cuban institutions of the Caribbean Cultural Training Hub, seeking to reinforce its capacities to deliver courses to students from the Caribbean.
We are convinced that these resources shall become creativity and innovation drivers not only at EICTV, but also at the Caribbean Cultural Training Hub, expanding their impact to Caribbean countries and resonating in regions even farther away.
To date, over 600 students from 17 Caribbean countries have been trained in the Hub’s courses, thanks to scholarships facilitated by Transcultura. These sound courses correspond to the sound training round, the first delivered in the face-to-face modality, addressed specifically to young Caribbean filmmakers, after having trained 145 Caribbeans through ten online workshops on film production, storytelling, scriptwriting and the film market, among other themes.
The Transcultura programme is again providing EICTV the possibility to exchange with young people from the Caribbean and contribute to develop their cinematography, in their own countries. We are now in an optimal position to achieve the objectives of the programme, strengthening the cultural and creative industries of the Caribbean.
At present, a new Transcultura call is open for young people from the Caribbean for face-to-face courses in themes such as dance, visual arts and design.
