This Annual Report of the UNESCO Office in Peru summarises the outcomes of the interventions carried out in 2023 in partnership with the State and various sectors of Peruvian society, including civil society organisations, academia, the private sector, and regional and local governments.
Once again, 91Â鶹¹ú²ú¾«Æ·×ÔÅÄ responded effectively and promptly to the call of the country and its authorities, prioritising the approach to education, culture, sciences, communication, and information as important drivers for more sustainable development.
The year 2023 has been challenging worldwide. In Peru, the collateral effects of the global crisis, political instability, and the El Niño Coastal phenomenon have particularly affected the most disadvantaged communities. Therefore, our actions have focused on girls, boys, and adolescents in rural areas, indigenous women in the Amazon, and young people and students in primary and secondary education from migrant and refugee communities.
Our interventions have been designed to help bridge gaps, creating concrete opportunities that improve the quality and relevance of educational services, paving the way for rural adolescents, and more effectively including refugees and migrants. Along these lines, we have worked on generating evidence for decision-making in the education and cultural sectors, providing new data on enrolment, retention, and learning outcomes of the Venezuelan community, progress in achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4 on quality education, and the professional status of artists and cultural workers.
We have also continued to collaborate in the protection and transmission of Peru's diverse heritage, the safety of journalists, freedom of expression, and access to information. We have made innovative contributions in sustainable management of natural resources, biodiversity conservation, and climate change adaptation, proposing the approach of the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme, with an emphasis on people, especially indigenous peoples and their knowledge, to help address current challenges.
This year, moreover, our commitment to equity has been reflected in our projects that promote the advancement of careers and leadership of female cultural managers, artisans, and scientists.
The results obtained in 2023, through 24 interventions, projects, and programmes in 14 regions of the country, contribute to the implementation of the United Nations Cooperation Framework 2022-26 and constitute our contribution to the collective commitment of the System to leave no one behind and support the country in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals that make up the 2030 Agenda.
