UNESCO launches MIL Massive Open Online Courses in local languages for South East Europe and Turkey

鈥淭oday, the online world plays a crucial role in shaping people鈥檚 opinions and attitudes and that is why education must also include Media and Information Literacy skills to empower learners of all ages to exercise critical judgement and become discerning consumers of information,鈥 said 厂颈苍颈拧补 厂别拧耻尘, Head of the UNESCO Antenna in Sarajevo.

On 1 December 2022, UNESCO launched a new MIL Massive Open Online Courses for young people in all the languages of South East Europe and Turkey as well as in English. The content is  based on the UNESCO global MIL Curriculum and was localized and adapted for young people from the region thanks to the UNESCO EU-funded project 鈥Building Trust in Media in South East Europe and Turkey 鈥 Phase 2.鈥

Launched at a UNESCO-UNICEF conference, entitled 鈥淐all for Action to Reimagine Education in Bosnia and Herzegovina鈥 held in Sarajevo on 1 December 2022, the MOOC is openly accessible for the public in the region and available in 2 in B/H/S languages (in and alphabets), in Albanian, in English, in Macedonian and in Turkish. It encompasses 8 modules focusing on topics including disinformation and misinformation, artificial intelligence, protection of personal data, and video games.

The MIL MOOC offers the advantage of being flexible and user-friendly. The students can follow the classes from anywhere with an internet connection, without having to attend traditional in-person classes. To date, more than 700 students have registered to this MOOC.

In 2021, UNESCO also developed a MOOC on MIL for university students in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This MOOC, comprising 12 modules, was developed in Bosnian language in partnership with the Faculty of Political Science at the University of Sarajevo. The MOOC was approved by the University of Sarajevo as a credit-bearing course worth 3 European Credits Transfer (ECT) and made available on .
