UNESCO joins in celebrating the Day of the Cuban Archivist
The UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean participated in the activities honouring the Day of the Cuban Archivist. The main activity took place on 7 November at the Aula Magna of the University of Havana, with the presence of the Cuban President Miguel DÃaz Canel Bermúdez and other high-ranking authorities.
The ceremony, organized by the Cuban National Archive and the Federation of Cuban Workers (CTC) paid tribute to outstanding workers of the country’s archives, in charge of safeguarding a considerable part of Cuba’s documentary heritage, as a means to recognize the key role of archives and archivists in preserving the historical memory and in the construction of identity.
Through its Memory of the World programme, UNESCO facilitates the conservation of the world’s documentary heritage, supports its universal access and contributes to raise awareness of the existence and importance of preserving this legacy.
Until now, three Cuban documentary collections are listed on the International Register of the UNESCO Memory of the World Programme and 6 other collections are listed on the Regional Register. The Caribbean nation constituted the National Committee of this Programme in 1993, as a space for coordinating the work of experts and initiatives in this field.
