UNESCO Iraq Celebrates International Democracy Day, Highlighting Its Connection to Artificial Intelligence
UNESCO Iraq celebrated International Democracy Day by focusing on the intersection of democracy and artificial intelligence. Highlighting the crucial role of journalism as a cornerstone of democracies worldwide, UNESCO underscored its significance in safeguarding democratic values.
In a publication titled "Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Journalism," UNESCO underscored the potential risks AI poses to democracy through its impact on journalism. The report, released by UNESCO鈥檚 Communication and Information Sector, identified trends and indicators suggesting that AI is increasingly becoming a threat to the free press, which may place democracy on a dangerous trajectory.
In another publication, "Artificial Intelligence and Democracy," UNESCO鈥檚 Human Sciences Sector examined AI鈥檚 significant potential to affect electoral processes and political participation鈥攂oth positively and negatively. The report urged global readiness for the sweeping changes brought about by the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4.0).
UNESCO Iraq is organizing a specialized training course in Sulaymaniyah from 15 to 17 September for a group of Iraqi journalists focusing on journalists' rights and the influence of artificial intelligence.
Through its programs in Iraq, UNESCO continues to promote the principles of press and media freedom, advocating for the use of modern technologies, including ethical AI, to monitor media development indicators and ensure the safety and security of journalists.
