UNESCO holds a strategic dialogue with Japan over shared priorities

On 23 April, a strategic dialogue between UNESCO and the Government of Japan was held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, marking the highlight of the Annual Review Meeting from 23 to 26 April, 2024.

Ms. Zazie SCHAFER, Director of the Bureau of Strategic Planning of UNESCO, expressed her gratitude for the longstanding support provided by the Government of Japan, including both political and financial contributions. 鈥淥ur partnership is built on areas where Japan is an undisputed knowledge leader, with a vast body of expertise and networks that enrich our collaboration and underscore its relevance in domestic and global fora, a major strength of our collaboration鈥 said Ms Schafer. 

She highlighted Japan鈥檚 role as a leading supporter in crisis and transition situations, noting its status as the largest supporter of UNESCO鈥檚 emergency response to Ukraine and one of the first donors to contribute to UNESCO鈥檚 Emergency Programme of Assistance for Gaza.

H.E Takehiro KANO, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Permanent Delegate of Japan to UNESCO, appreciated UNESCO鈥 efforts in various fields. He expressed Japan鈥檚 commitment to continuing support for UNESCO鈥檚 activities in the six strategic priority areas, namely:

  • Protection of all forms of heritage
  • Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)
  • Disaster Risk Reduction
  • UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development
  • Emerging Technology锛圓I, neurotechnology锛
  • Promotion of MONDIACULT 2022 Declaration.

Following the Ambassador鈥檚 opening address, UNESCO鈥檚 Assistant Directors-General explained how their current programmes contribute to the six priority areas and discussed ways to enhance partnerships.

For the first time, UNESCO and Japan jointly initiated a series of communications on their partnership on 25 April through their respective social media platforms to showcase key results achieved. A dedicated webpage, available in English and Japanese, was also launched and will be updated to host news, stories and further details about ongoing and future initiatives. 

On 24-26 April, representatives from UNESCO and Japan conducted technical discussions on the implementation of projects funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT). Technical discussions with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) are scheduled to take place in early May.
