UNESCO Empowered Youth and Young Professionals in SETI for DRR

Opening Ceremony of the Asia Pacific Regional Workshop on Strengthening, Empowering, Mobilizing Youth and Young Professionals in SETI for DRR

UNESCO Office Jakarta, as the Regional Sciences Bureau for Asia and the Pacific, jointly with the International Center for Interdisciplinary and Advanced Research of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (ICIAR LIPI) and U-INSPIRE organized Asia and the Pacific Regional Workshop Youth and Young Professionals in Science, Engineering, Technology, and Innovation (SETI) for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) in Serpong, Banten, Indonesia, on 1 - 4 November 2018. The workshop was also supported by UNISDR.

Fifty four (54) youth and young professionals from 27 countries with a strong composition of 39 International participants and 15 national participants. Fifteen (15) prominent international and national speakers contributed their knowledge and experience, which became a very valuable experience and learning process to our youth and young professionals.

The workshop responds directly to the Action for Science and Technology for DRR in Asia, as agreed during the 1st Asian Science and Technology Conference in DRR held in Bangkok in 2016, and underlined its action under Priority 3: Develop young professionals in the field of multi-disciplinary disaster risk reduction. The objectives of the workshop, among others was to build understanding among youth and young professionals on their role in science, engineering, technology and innovation for disaster risk and reduction and Develop concept and ideas for session/ side meeting at the DRR Global Forum in 2019 in Geneva on Youth and Young Professionals in SETI for DRR.

During the workshop UNESCO and LIPI also facilitated the official launching lf U-INSPIRE Indonesia as national platform for youth and young professionals in SETI for DRR and motivate and encourage the establishment of U-INSPIRE national platform in other Asia and the Pacific countries.
