UNESCO emphasizes importance of AI Ethics in Kazakhstan
On 19 May 2023, a pioneering international scientific and practical conference 鈥淎rtificial Intelligence and Big Data in the Judiciary and Law Enforcement: Realities and Demands of the Times 鈥 took place in Astana, Kazakhstan.
This groundbreaking initiative was jointly organized by , and , supported by the Social and Human Sciences of the UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office, and .
Over 100 participants鈥攊ncluding Prosecutor General, Ministers of Justice and Digital Development, Innovations and Aerospace Industry of the Republic of Kazakhstan, heads of state authorities, national and foreign scientists鈥攅ngaged in this landmark conference, the first of its kind in Kazakhstan. They exchanged views and experiences on a range of topics, such as the legal regulation of artificial intelligence, cybersecurity in the face of modern challenges, and the problems and prospects of applying artificial intelligence in judicial and law enforcement activities.
It is necessary to develop specific measures for regulating artificial intelligence.
Opening the event, Berik Asylov, Prosecutor General of the Republic of Kazakhstan, said:
Information technology is becoming a driver of change in the world. Artificial intelligence is being introduced in various fields, including law enforcement.
In his presentation, Maxat Baibekov, National Programme Officer for Social and Human Sciences at the UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office, delved into , stressing its pertinence amidst Kazakhstan's swift digital transformation. He highlighted the need to infuse ethical guidelines into the development and deployment of AI systems, with the objective of mitigating possible misuse and ensuring that AI technologies adhere to human rights, inclusivity, transparency, and accountability.
The conference concluded with constructive dialogues, promoting the sharing of insights and strategies to tackle potential challenges and harness opportunities brought by AI and Big Data in the judicial and law enforcement system. The event echoed UNESCO's commitment to facilitating ethical and human-centered use of AI in various sectors, including law enforcement and judicial system.
