Under the umbrella of the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development (IDSSD), UNESCO is partnering with Nitte University in India, specifically the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) Reference Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance and Aquaculture Biosecurity, and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research to support two African scientists in attending a hands-on training course from 18 to 22 of November 2024. This course focuses on understanding and combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a major global threat to both human and animal health.

UNESCO鈥檚 action in basic sciences

Through a variety of programmes and initiatives, UNESCO supports research institutes, scientists, and researchers in their pursuit of scientific advancement. It also focuses on STEM education, offering resources and training for schoolteachers and students. Activities such as bootcamps, workshops, seminars, webinars, and awards are all part of UNESCO's efforts to foster a thriving international scientific community.

About the course

The five-day international hands-on training course aims to tackle the pressing global challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). AMR is a growing threat to human and animal health as it undermines the effectiveness of standard treatments thus jeopardizing food security and economic stability.

The course which will take place at the FAO Reference Center for Antimicrobial Resistance and Aquaculture Biosecurity at Nitte University, India, aims to equip researchers with the tools and knowledge needed to tackle AMR, therefore enhancing scientific capacity and fostering solutions that are vital for global health and sustainability.
