UNESCO and Kids Code Jeunesse join forces to promote data and algorithms literacy
UNESCO and are proud to announce a new partnership to promote the Data and Algorithms Literacy programme, with the support of the . The two main goals of this partnership are the organization of an international challenge to get youth using AI and data to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, as well as the promotion of data and algorithm literacy through advocacy activities and provision of training resources, accessible through digital platforms
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has great potential to accelerate the process of realizing and developing global goals around education. It can reduce difficulties in access to learning, automate management processes and optimize methods to improve learning outcomes. However, the integration of AI in educational settings will take time. There is a lack of knowledge about how AI works, while political and technological gaps continue to reduce accessibility. Above all, there are few resources that empower teachers and students to understand and apply AI together.
UNESCO believes in the importance of equitable and inclusive use of AI in education for quality education, the promotion of science education particularly for girls and women, and the provision of educational opportunities to migrants, refugees and vulnerable populations.
鈥淎rtificial Intelligence literacy is a priority in today's society,鈥 said Stefania Giannini, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Education, highlighting the importance of launching this new partnership with Kids Code Jeunesse. 鈥淭o ensure that no one is left behind in an ever-changing world that is being driven by technological advances, it is critical that global citizens of all ages have at least a basic set of AI competencies and skills to live, work, learn and participate in modern society.
鈥淭he next decade is a critical one for our planet and its people, and we will only be able to build a fair and just future if we equip all citizens with the skills they need to thrive in a digital world. In partnership with CCUNESCO and UNESCO, we will engage youth and adults alike to think about how algorithms and data impact our lives, to learn how AI works, and to explore how the ethical development and deployment of AI can help solve real-world problems鈥 said Kate Arthur, CEO at KCJ
鈥樷橧n Canada, Kids Code Jeunesse is a leader in teaching youth about artificial intelligence, code and digital citizenship. This is why the Canadian Commission for UNESCO partnered up with them to launch the , and raise awareness and educate youth about the presence of algorithms and how they influence our digital experiences. We are excited about this new partnership with UNESCO to extend our reach internationally.鈥欌 said Roda Muse, Secretary General of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO
This partnership will be launched at the on 7 and 8 December 2021, which is being held to raise awareness on AI in education. The event will bring together educators, education managers, and policy-makers to plan and implement strategies on data and algorithms literacy for k-12 schools, including pedagogical activities for ensuring result-based learning.
