Under the theme 鈥淎I and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation,鈥 the 2025 International Day of Education will be celebrated on January 24th. This year鈥檚 focus is on how education can empower individuals and communities to navigate, understand, and influence technological advancements while ensuring human agency remains central in the age of automation.

UNESCO鈥檚 Director-General, Audrey Azoulay, has dedicated International Education Day 2025 to exploring the opportunities and challenges posed by artificial intelligence. She urges UNESCO Member States to prioritize training for both teachers and students on the responsible use of AI in education.

Egypt is focusing on integrating AI and digital tools into its education system as part of its broader commitment to the 2030 Agenda. With initiatives focusing on digital transformation and AI-driven curriculum reform, the country aims to modernize schools and provide capacity-building programs for educators. Recognizing the vital role of teachers as drivers of progress, Egypt is investing in equipping them with the skills needed to adapt to technological advancements.

UNESCO鈥檚 Regional Office in Cairo actively supports the Country鈥檚 efforts through a range of initiatives, including policy dialogue, capacity development for integrating ICT and AI in education, promoting Open Educational Resources (OER) and Media Information Literacy (MIL), and addressing digital equity and inclusivity through targeted programs for marginalized communities.

The 2025 IDE seeks to raise awareness among policymakers and stakeholders, fostering dialogue on the policy implications of AI in education and its transformative impact on learning systems. It emphasizes exploring AI鈥檚 potential in teaching, learning, and administration while preserving essential human elements such as emotional intelligence and interpersonal relationships. The event also highlights promoting critical AI literacies to help educators and learners understand, use, and shape AI responsibly, encouraging lifelong learning and adaptive strategies to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving technological landscape, and supporting governments in integrating AI into education policies responsibly and effectively.

Education systems worldwide are being reimagined to help students and teachers understand AI鈥檚 potential and limitations. This foundational knowledge empowers them to make informed decisions about what tasks can be automated and which require human oversight. AI is already influencing higher education by streamlining admissions, enhancing instruction, and analyzing data to improve decision-making in areas such as teacher placement, academic planning, and career guidance. In Egypt, AI is also being leveraged to bridge learning gaps and address skilling, upskilling, and reskilling needs, ensuring that the workforce is prepared for the future.

The UNESCO Regional Office in Cairo, in collaboration with Huawei and Egypt鈥檚 Ministry of Education and Technical Education (MoETE), has spearheaded the 鈥淭echnology-Enabled Open Schools for All鈥 project (2020-2023). This initiative focuses on designing, testing, and scaling up technology-enabled open school systems. Key achievements include establishing a National Distance Learning Centre to support continuous professional development for teachers, inaugurating a digital content studio to help educators create high-quality digital learning materials, enhancing digital infrastructure to improve accessibility and connectivity in schools, and addressing learning gaps for marginalized groups to promote inclusivity and equity. The project has directly benefited 950,000 K-12 teachers across Egypt, demonstrating the country鈥檚 commitment to fostering a digitally empowered and inclusive education system.
