UNESCO and Bibi Russell Put Fashion at the Service of Development

On 26 June, UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, opened a cultural event entitled 鈥淪upport crafts to save local cultural industries and to create sustainable livelihood opportunities鈥 organized by Bibi Russell, UNESCO Artist for Peace.

鈥淐ulture is more than monuments, songs and cloth 鈥 it is who we are.  No society can flourish without culture,鈥 said the Director-General. 鈥淣o development can be sustainable鈥.

鈥淭his is the message has always carried, and that we send today, by supporting local cultural industries to create sustainable livelihoods.鈥

In recognition of her work to promote the traditional artisanal crafts of her Bangladeshi homeland, Bibi Russell was named UNESCO Artist for Peace in 1999.

This event took place within the framework of UNESCO鈥檚 , where UNESCO鈥檚 Goodwill Ambassadors gather to discuss the Organization鈥檚 work and priority programmes.
