Science Engineering, Education and Languages at the Heart of Director-General鈥檚 Visit to China
From 1 to 5 June, the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, is undertaking a visit to China on the occasion of the International Conference on Engineering Sciences and Technology (ICEST) 2014. The Director-General will deliver a keynote address at the opening session, which will take place in the presence of the President of China XI Jinping and other dignitaries. Held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, the Conference is on the theme of 鈥淓ngineering and the Future of Humankind鈥.
While in China, the Director-General is expected to meet with the Vice-Premier Liu Yandong. The Director-General will sign and launch the International Knowledge Centre for Engineering Sciences and Technology (IKCEST), a new Category 2 Centre under the auspices of UNESCO. The Centre will be led by the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
The Director-General will also open the International Conference on 鈥淓nhancing Language Ability and Education for the 21st Century鈥 in Suzhou. Organized by the Ministry of Education of the People鈥檚 Republic of China in partnership with UNESCO, the Conference will bring governments鈥 ministers of education, linguists, educators and international development partners to reflect on challenges and new options for effective language ability and language education.
In addition, Irina Bokova will deliver an address at the Third World Landslide Forum, an event organized by the International Consortium on Landslides (ICL) and the China Geological Survey, that UNESCO sponsors.
She will also give a lecture at Tsinghua University on 鈥淟eadership, Soft Power and Values for a Better Future for All鈥 and meet with the President of the University, Chen Jining.
In China, the Director-General will launch the Creative Economy Report in Chinese. The launch will take place at the Dadu Museum.
In addition, during the visit, the Director-General will renew the agreement between UNESCO and the Xinhua News Agency, for joint and concerted cooperation to carry out common projects that contribute to the promotion and dissemination of information about UNESCO鈥檚 priorities and activities.
