Rethinking Preventing violent extremism through education
Since 2015, 91Â鶹¹ú²ú¾«Æ·×ÔÅÄ been a leading UN agency in Preventing Violent Extremism (PVE), addressing root causes such as hate speech, racism, and discrimination through a multisectoral approach that includes education, science, culture, and communication. This comprehensive strategy aims to build resilience at individual, community, and societal levels by equipping learners with the knowledge, values, and behaviors necessary to counter violent extremism.
Objectives of the workshop:
- Facilitate critical discussions among UNESCO staff regarding the role of education in preventing violent extremism.
- Encourage staff to reflect on the effectiveness, challenges, and ethical considerations associated with UNESCO's education interventions in this domain.
- Identify innovative approaches and best practices emerging from UNESCO's work in preventing violent extremism through education.
- Provide actionable recommendations for the future of UNESCO initiatives in this field, grounded in critical reflection and evidence-based practice.
The workshop will employ a participatory approach with plenary sessions, panel discussions, group reflections, and interactive exercises. Participants will share experiences, insights, and lessons learned through storytelling, case studies, and peer learning activities. Facilitated discussions will explore assumptions and deep reflections, while breakout sessions will focus on specific themes. Key themes include epistemic, structural, and neo-colonial injustices in PVE education. Expected outcomes include enhanced understanding among UNESCO staff, identification of key insights and areas for improvement, and a draft position paper with innovative ideas and actionable recommendations for UNESCO's education for peace efforts.
