The International Year of Quantum Science and Techology

After 100 years of the initial development of quantum mechanics, our journey of exploring its impact on human society has just begun. Quantum science and technology (QST) is advancing at an unprecedented pace. Built on principles of quantum mechanics, QST leverages phenomena like superposition and entanglement, enabling breakthroughs in areas ranging from ultra-secure data transfer to highly sensitive environmental sensors and powerful quantum computing. Just as the digital revolution reshaped societies, the quantum science and technologies have the potential to advancing computing, encryption, and resource management, revolutionizing sectors such as healthcare, environmental sustainability, climate modeling, and renewable energy. Looking forward, quantum science and technology will be a key cross-cutting scientific field, having a tremendous impact on critical societal challenges highlighted by the U.N.'s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. These advances also bring pressing questions about ethics, accessibility, and governance, making it essential to approach QST's development with an inclusive, internationally coordinated framework.

In advocating for the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ), UNESCO supported the proposal to highlight quantum science's central role in advancing areas like sustainable development, education, and global technological innovation. This initiative was included in May 2023 during the UNESCO Executive Board meeting, followed by an endorsement from the full UNESCO General Conference in November 2023. In recognition of these transformative opportunities and challenges, on June 7, 2024, the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology. This year-long initiative aims to elevate awareness of QST’s global potential, foster international collaboration, and promote responsible and equitable advancements in quantum technologies.

The Event

This event will focus on the celebration of the IYQ, as well as advocating for quantum to serve the common good. Known for its role as a center of international scientific diplomacy, Geneva is an ideal venue for this gathering, which will connect policymakers, scientists, and civil society, “La Genève internationale”, in shaping a sustainable and inclusive future for quantum science and humanity. As a steering member of the IYQ, the Open Quantum Institute (OQI) aligns with UNESCO’s mandates, seeks to make quantum technology resources and technical expertise widely available, supports open research collaboration, and drives investment in quantum infrastructure to help in advancing some crucial fields, such as education. As a partner and co-organizer of this event, the OQI will play a crucial role in establishing roadmaps that enable quantum computing to maximize its societal impact through educational, social, human science, and cultural perspectives.
