With the financial support from Italy, 91Â鶹¹ú²ú¾«Æ·×ÔÅÄ committed to the careful preservation of the landmark site. In March 2024, UNESCO conducted a comprehensive structural assessment, which serves as the foundation for these efforts. Using advanced techniques—including 3D laser scanning, non-destructive sonic and vibration testing, and material analysis—&²Ô²ú²õ±è;91Â鶹¹ú²ú¾«Æ·×ÔÅÄ meticulously assessed the structural damage. This work has led to the development of a non-linear structural model for both the cathedral and its bell tower.
This analysis uncovered critical vulnerabilities, particularly in the bell tower and nave, which required immediate stabilization. By documenting structural shifts, assessing material integrity and mapping the damage, 91Â鶹¹ú²ú¾«Æ·×ÔÅÄ been able to plan targeted interventions. These efforts not only address current structural concerns but also ensure that the work meets the high standards required for a site on UNESCO World Heritage List in Danger.
Following the assessments, UNESCO supported critical repairs to the roof, in the epicentre of the missile strike. Restoration teams reinforced the structure with a concrete belt, carried out masonry repairs, and installed a durable roof supported by metal trusses and copper shielding. Additional measures, including fire protection, water resistance, and thermal insulation, were also put in place to ensure the long-term safety and preservation of the building.
For the people of Odesa, the restoration of the Transfiguration Cathedral is not just a technical undertaking—it stands as a powerful symbol of hope and resilience.
The Transfiguration Cathedral has always been the heart of Odesa for my family and me. It’s more than just a building—it’s where our community celebrated weddings, baptisms, and found solace during difficult times. I was shocked and devastated when we learned that it was hit. However, watching the building come back to life reminds us that our city’s spirit is unshakable. This Cathedral is a symbol of our faith, our history, and our hope for the future.
I want to thank the people of Italy and the Italian government for the help that our Cathedral received and continues to receive. After the tragedy, there was so much damage, and today we are cooperating with UNESCO's team in Ukraine. During this time, UNESCO helped restore part of the wall that was destroyed and 115 square meters of the roof. Our cooperation continues. Together with UNESCO, we will now restore the heating in our cathedral and continue with the restoration process.
UNESCO’s ongoing efforts will continue with repairing the heating system, an essential step in ensuring the Cathedral is again accessible and fully functional for worshippers and visitors alike. These initiatives are part of UNESCO’s broader mission to preserve cultural landmarks in Ukraine amid the threats of the ongoing war.
As Odesa rebuilds, the Transfiguration Cathedral stands as a testament to the resilience of its people, the vital importance of cultural heritage, and the power of international solidarity to safeguard humanity’s shared heritage.
