New Valley Governorate and UNESCO Cairo united in favor of the protection of the Intangible Heritage of the Dates Palm cultures in the Oasis in Egypt

On the opening of the Dates Palm Festival, Governor of New Valley, Major General Mohamed Al-Zamlot invited UNESCO representative, Dr. Nuria Sanz to visit the Oasis.

On occasion of the opening of the Dates Palm Festival in Kharga on 14th October 2023, the Governor of New Valley, Major General Mohamed Al-Zamlot invited UNESCO representative, Dr. Nuria Sanz to visit the Oasis of Dakhla and Kharga, to participate at the Festival that celebrates the role of Egypt within the International UNESCO nomination on Date Palms, in company of Governors and Vice-governors and to have the opportunity to meet with more than 20 pivotal local institutions in matters related to culture and education, namely:

In Dakhla: - School of Agriculture in Dakhla; Qilaa Dabaa and the German Institute (Heinrich Barth Institute in Dakhla) in Balat; Al-Bashandi village (carpet-production) and Al Qasr Islamic City - the pottery factory - handicrafts)

In Kharga: The Oases Dates Festival; Archaeological sites i.e the Necropolis of El-Bagawat and Temple of Hibis...; Heritage Center (evening); New Valley University and the farm of the faculty of Agriculture; Dates show room of Al Tahan, Hassan Helmy Centre; International School and Japanese School and WE Technology School.

During the visits, accompanied by the Vice-Governor Dr. Hanan Magdy and her team and representatives of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, Mr Yasser Farouk and Mr Amr Abdel-Karim, UNESCO had the opportunity to discuss some initiatives to include the Governorate in the implementation of forthcoming programmes, as : Community Learning Centers, Learning cities, TVET, World Heritage candidatures on Oasis, Biosphere Reserves, Inventories on Intangible and Tangible Heritage, including paleontological remains. A very promising meeting with the Agriculture Faculty at the University Farm inspired future common engagements to merge farmers and researchers’ knowledges for a long-lasting preservation of the date palm production/consumption legacy.
