UNESCO鈥檚 Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme will launch the implementation of the 鈥淢angrove Restoration: Nature-Based Solutions in Biosphere Reserves of Latin America and the Caribbean鈥 project (MangRes Project), thanks to the financial support from the Government of Flanders, Kingdom of Belgium.

This three-year initiative aims to assess the state of mangrove ecosystems, their restoration potential, and implement recovery efforts by integrating local and scientific knowledge while promoting education for sustainable development.

The Biosphere Reserves participating in the project include: La Encrucijada (Mexico), Noroeste Amotapes-Manglares (Peru), Seaflower (Colombia), Guanahacabibes Peninsula (Cuba), Macizo del Cajas (Ecuador), and Dari茅n (Panama). Additionally, thanks to the contribution of the Autonomous National Parks Organization (OAPN), the Xiriualtique - Jiquilisco Biosphere Reserve (El Salvador) has joined the project.

MangRes Project activities will be supported by a scientific group composed of experts from participating countries and Flemish specialists from Belgium, ensuring knowledge exchange, experience sharing, and strengthened north-south and south-south collaboration.

The MangRes Annual Meeting will bring together representatives from the seven participating Biosphere Reserves, along with experts in mangrove conservation and restoration. This event, to be held at the Escuela Superior Polit茅cnica del Litoral (ESPOL) in Guayaquil from July 21 to 25, 2025, will serve as a key platform for exchanging knowledge and experiences in the protection and recovery of these essential ecosystems for biodiversity and local communities.
