#Made_In_TheCaribbean: a UNESCO Transcultura fashion design competition to highlight the creative talent of the region’s youth
DEADLINE EXTENDED UNTIL 11 MARCH
With the ambition of connecting creativity beyond Caribbean boundaries, the programme Transcultura: Integrating Cuba, the Caribbean and the European Union through Culture and Creativity, implemented by UNESCO and funded by the European Union, has launched the Transcultura Fashion Design Competition. This is the first in a series of thematic calls for the Transcultura Awards that aims to acknowledge and celebrate the creative talent of young Caribbean fashion professionals.
The competition, under the theme #Made_In_The_Caribbean, challenges fashion designers to present a contemporary, fashion-forward mini collection (of 3 to 5 pieces) that represents Caribbean identity, the cultural diversity of the region, its cultural and artistic expressions, its exchanges and mutual influences and/or evokes the common cultural traits of the Caribbean. Entries can be submitted in three categories: fashion design, accessories and jewellery.
The competition will offer the selected finalists the opportunity to exhibit their creative work at the ‘Fashion in da House’ show, a unique fashion event to be held at the UNESCO Regional Office in Havana in early May 2024 to strengthen the bonds between fashion and Caribbean culture. The UNESCO Transcultura programme will fully cover the participation costs of the finalists in the exhibition and award ceremony in Havana, where the best entry in each category will receive the Transcultura Award, and the People's Choice Award will be announced. The judging panel may extend special awards to promote and recognize emerging eco-friendly designers' works.
This UNESCO Transcultura call is aimed at young creatives in the fashion industry, aged between 18 and 35, who are nationals and permanent residents of Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago.
Fashion designers who have launched a fashion business are particularly encouraged to apply. Priority will be given to women-led fashion businesses and to participants who are leading a creative initiative where the creative process has a potential cultural, social and/or economic impact at a community, regional, national or industry level.
The deadline for submitting the applications is Monday 11 March 2024 at 23:59 Havana time (UTC-5). The selected finalists will be announced in early March 2024.
The Transcultura Award is launched as a regional award within the implementation framework of the Transcultura programme to explore and promote the creative talent and entrepreneurship potential of particularly outstanding young cultural professionals in the Cultural and Creative Industries in the Caribbean.
