The L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Viet Nam National Program celebrates its 15th anniversary

(Hanoi, 09.09.2024) - The L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science – Viet Nam National program celebrated its 15-year-milestone on 9 September 2024 in Ha Noi city.

The celebration was to support the development of Vietnamese women in their scientific pathway and joint efforts in closing the gender gaps in science. In Vietnam, the 15th anniversary ceremony was held at the Green One UN House in Hanoi, to honor 38 outstanding Vietnamese women scientists who have been awarded the National Fellowships from 2009 to 2023. 

Within the framework of the partnership between UNESCO and L’Oréal Foundation, the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science (FWIS) program supports women scientists as they strive for scientific excellence and seek to participate equally in solving the great challenges facing humanity.  The FWIS National program annually honors and brings together remarkable Vietnamese women whose research contributes to changing the world by developing new science covering a wide variety of applications including health, food security and the environment.

Since its launch in Vietnam 2009, the FWIS National program in Vietnam has honored 38 young talented Vietnamese female scientists (including three who were awarded the International Rising Talent in 2015, 2018 and 2022) for their outstanding contributions in two research fields, Life Sciences and Material Sciences. This initiative has enabled them to continue pursuing their passion for science and further advance in their scientific careers, contributing to closing the gender gap in science.  

 

The 15th anniversary ceremony received, among distinguished guests, Ms. Lidia Brito - Assistant General Director of UNESCO, Ms. Pauline Tamesis - United Nations Resident Coordinator in Vietnam, Ms. Le Thi Hong Van - Director of the Department of Cultural Diplomacy and UNESCO Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Olivia Brochet - Ambassador of France to Vietnam, Mr. Benjamin Rachow - L’Oréal Vietnam’s CEO and Mr. Jonathan W. Baker - UNESCO Representative to Vietnam.

The National Fellows received during the event the 15th anniversary commemoratives for their remarkable contributions to the Vietnam and the world. The event celebrated contributions by these female scientists and seek to inspire the young generation of women to engage more with scientific research and scientific areas to help solve emerging challenges.

 

At the event, there was an exhibition on “15 years of FWIS Vietnam National Program: Closing the Gender Gap in science in Vietnam” to showcase the inspiring scientific pathway of National Fellows since they were awarded and highlighted the partnership between UNESCO Hanoi and L’Oreal Vietnam in empowering women and promoting gender equality in science in country. Further, the event was an opportunity for national FWIS awardees to share their inspiring stories as role models for younger generations of women researchers who wanted to pursue their scientific careers and break the glass ceiling.

On this occasion, L'Oréal Vietnam and UNESCO Vietnam reaffirmed the partnership for joint actions to promote women and girls in science, and advance gender equality in the field of science in Vietnam.
