2025 edition

World Metrology Day 2025 focuses on the power of measurement to drive global progress and celebrates 150 years of the Metre Convention with a landmark event at UNESCO Headquarters, gathering government representatives, leading scientists, industry experts, students, and the public to honor this longstanding international collaboration. It also highlights the importance of measurement science for business, trade, and sustainable development.

What is metrology?

Metrology refers to the science of measurement which underpins countless aspects of our daily lives. From buying a kilogram of oranges, to using a GPS in our car to navigate, or crossing a bridge, the metric system is omnipresent in our lives.

World Metrology Day and UNESCO

World Metrology Day was established in 1999 by the International Committee for Weights and Measures (CIPM) to commemorate the signing of the Metre Convention on 20 May 1875 in Paris. This international agreement laid the foundation for a globally unified and consistently evolving metric system.

UNESCO celebrated World Metrology Day for the first time in 2024, following the decision of UNESCO's 42nd General Conference in 2023. The UNESCO decision emphasizes the crucial role of accurate, internationally recognized measurements in addressing global challenges such as sustainable development, energy efficiency, public health and technological advancements, among others.

Each year, celebrations involve national metrology institutes, legal metrology authorities, regional organizations, and numerous stakeholders across more than 50 countries.
