High-level international conference on glaciers' preservation

The High-level international conference on glaciers' preservation provides an important international platform to address current challenges in global water security. This forum brings together multiple stakeholders to examine the relationship between glacier preservation and sustainable development goals.
The conference agenda covers key aspects of glacier preservation, focusing on water resource management, risk mitigation frameworks, and the integration of indigenous knowledge systems. The proceedings will develop solutions for vulnerable regions and populations, in response to documented glacier loss worldwide. Current data indicates a one-third reduction in mountain ice globally, significantly impacting water availability for billions of people across drinking water systems, agricultural operations, and energy production sectors. The Hindu Kush Himalayan region projects potential losses of up to two-thirds of its glaciers by 2100, while Tajikistan reports a 30% reduction in glacier mass over the previous century.
In response to these challenges, the United Nations has designated 2025 as the International Year of Glaciers' Preservation and established the Decade of Action for Cryospheric Sciences (2025-2034). The official programme encompasses opening and closing ceremonies, plenary sessions, leaders' round tables, pre-conference forums, and thematic sessions. These sessions will address glacier-related climate change mitigation, adaptation measures, loss and damage assessment protocols, research requirements, monitoring mechanisms, and resilience planning frameworks. The pre-conference day (May 29) includes specialized forums, side events, and cultural programming, enabling professional discourse, knowledge transfer, and stakeholder engagement.
