UNESCO Office, Jakarta held the “Sub-regional Forum on the National Institutional Change in Tourism and Vocation Education for Sustainable Development” on 13 March 2019 in Bali, Indonesia, to initiate the launch of the new project entitled “Capacity Building Trainings for Institutional Change in Tourism Vocation Education for Sustainable Development”, supported by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).

 

The project aims to build capacities of national curriculum development specialists and education planners to integrate Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in curriculum review, reform and development, especially in tourism vocation education in Indonesia and Timor-Leste as the pilot countries. The expected outputs of the project are teacher’s guidebook on action-oriented ESD for institutional change in tourism vocation education and its training for teachers and curriculum developers.

UNESCO Office, Jakarta is working closely with its cluster countries in ensuring the integration of ESD taking place with all commitments and support from the government. Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) for Tourism is one of the entry points to initiate sustainable development through vocational training and practical life skills development.

Around 50 participants from Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Timor-Leste attended the forum, representing the National Government, TVET Centres, Curriculum Centres, Teachers Training Centres, TVET Experts, as well as private sector.

 

The forum served as a platform for TVET practitioners and curriculum developers to share the good practices on TVET for tourism and develop recommendations for better implementation in the future. The forum also provided recommendations to strengthen the capacity of tourism vocation teachers linked with ESD.

The forum was officiated by the Director of UNESCO Jakarta, Prof. Shahbaz Khan, with the attendance of the Executive Chair of the Indonesian National Commission for UNESCO, Ministry of Education and Culture, Prof. Arief Rachman, and the Director General for Secondary Education, Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of Timor-Leste, Mr Luis da C. Fernandes.
