Kyrgyzstan's Journalism Education Platform in Focus

12 September 2023, UNESCO Almaty organized a workshop for journalism schools from four universities in Kyrgyzstan to build a National Journalism Education Platform.

The participants discussed utilization of the resources generated by IPDC's Global Initiative for Excellence in Journalism Education focused on the development of gender-responsive courses to enhance the quality of journalism education.

Following universities formed a the working group on journalism education platform: 

  • Kyrgyz National University, named after Jusup Balasagyn
  • Bishkek State University named after K.Karasaev
  • Ala-Too International University 
  • Osh State University

The group's strategic priorities align with the principles of the Paris Declaration on freedom in journalism education. These priorities aim to ensure the independent governance of journalism schools and the preservation of journalism education as a distinct discipline, while also emphasizing the importance of striking a balance between academic knowledge and technical skills. Additionally, gender equality is recognized as a cross-cutting priority within journalism education. Furthermore, the universities addressed various topics, including methodology, quality control, standards for Open Educational Resources, and the adaptation of journalism curricula for Kyrgyzstan.

During the discussion a moderator Elira Turdubaeva, asked to present a vision of universities priorities regarding adaptation of the existing courses in Kyrgyz Language developed by UNESCO Chair on Journalism Education of Al-Farabi Kazak State University:

  • The Kyrgyz National University voted for the MOOC: Reporting on violence against women and girls
  • Osh State University for the MOOC on the Safety of Journalists
  • Bishkek State University for the MOOC: Conflict-sensitive reporting
  • International Ala-Too University initially voted for the MOOC: Reporting on Artificial Intelligence.

After the group discussions universities presented vision of their courses. Some of them suggested expansion of existing modules, some proposed modifications of the themes in accordance with the local priorities. The technical infrastructure of the platform provided by Ala-Too International University.
