DESCRIPTION OF THE INTERNSHIP

As the custodian of the Education 2030 Agenda and the lead UN agency for Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4): Quality Education, UNESCO leads efforts to help Member States achieve SDG 4, aiming to 'ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.' Emphasizing its commitment to leaving no one behind, SDG 4 highlights the importance of reaching crisis-affected populations. It states that in emergencies, education is 'immediately protective, providing life-saving knowledge and skills and psychosocial support.' Additionally, it promotes flexible learning pathways, recognizing the non-linear nature of education during crises. 

The Arab region has been significantly affected by the alarming increase in the frequency, complexity, and scale of crises, including conflicts, natural disasters, public health emergencies, and socio-economic crises, leading to disruptions in education for millions of children and youth. Approximately 53 million children in the region are in need of humanitarian assistance due to various crises, including over 6.9 million internally displaced children and 6.4 million refugee children. An estimated 30 million children in the Middle East and North Africa region are out of school, posing significant risks to their learning and overall wellbeing.   

UNESCO Regional Office for UN Coordination for the Arab States and UNESCO Representative to Lebanon and Syria (hereafter referred to as the Beirut Office), covering Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Iraq and Jordan, providing expertise in the thematic areas of Education, Culture, Communication and Information, Social and Human Sciences, and Natural Sciences. 

Under the overall authority of the Director of the Beirut Office and direct supervision of the Education Programme Specialist, the intern will assist in the coordination, implementation, monitoring of initiatives related to Education in Emergencies in the region. Specifically, s/he will undertake the following tasks and responsibilities:  

  • Support in the development and implementation of Education in Emergencies initiatives in the Arab region, including supporting in preparing the project documents, concept notes, budgets, etc. 

  • Support in developing and reviewing regional and national strategies, policies and plans related to Education in Emergencies, with a specific focus on supporting the development of the UNESCO Education in Emergencies Strategy for the Arab Region (2025-2030). 

  • Provide assistance to and participate in the relevant events, conferences, visits, workshops, meetings, etc. 

  • Support in monitoring work plans and budget. 

  • Support in reporting on the implementation of the project activities. 

  • Support in analysing and compiling background data for potential partnerships and fundraising events and opportunities.  

  • Contribute to the preparation of knowledge and communication products, materials for advocacy and outreach. 

  • Perform other duties as deemed appropriate by the Director and the supervisor.
