UNESCO Promotes Multilingual Education in Cameroon on Mother Language Day

During key events hosted by Cameroon’s Ministries of Education, UNESCO highlighted the importance of preserving and promoting mother languages.

Commemoration Ceremony at the Ministry of Basic Education

On Thursday, 6 March 2025, the Ministry of Basic Education hosted the 26th edition of International Mother Language Day, slightly delayed from its official date. Under the theme "Languages Matter," the event highlighted the crucial role of linguistic diversity and multilingual education in Cameroon.

UNESCO played a central role in the celebration, emphasizing the importance of preserving and promoting mother languages worldwide. Mr. Ould Saïd, representing UNESCO, delivered the , reaffirming the organization’s commitment to linguistic diversity as a cornerstone of education and cultural identity.

Commemoration Ceremony at the Ministry of Basic Education

The ceremony marked the culmination of a week-long series of activities aimed at fostering awareness and engagement in multilingual education. 

This milestone celebration provided an opportunity to reflect on Cameroon’s progress in integrating multilingual education into its national framework. It reinforced the urgency of continued efforts to ensure that linguistic heritage remains a vital part of education, strengthening cultural identity and promoting inclusive learning environments.

The event was presided over by Dr. Vivian Asheri Kilo, Secretary of State to the Minister of Basic Education, on behalf of Minister Professor Laurent Serge Etoundi Ngoa. The occasion brought together a distinguished gathering of officials, educators, and stakeholders in the education sector.

Ministry of Secondary Education 25th Edition of International Mother Language Day

In the dimension of linguistic diversity, UNESCO equally joined the Ministry of Secondary Education and other key stakeholders to celebrate the 25th Edition of International Mother Language Day at the National Museum in ³Û²¹´Ç³Ü²Ô»åé.

A key highlight of the celebration was the participation of students from various secondary schools in ³Û²¹´Ç³Ü²Ô»åé, who showcased their linguistic talents through quizzes, sketches, and poems performed in national languages. These engaging presentations reinforced the importance of promoting multilingualism among Cameroon’s youth. To encourage excellence and inspire more engagement in mother tongue preservation, UNESCO awarded prizes to students who delivered outstanding performances.

Presided over by the Inspector-Coordinator General of Letters, Arts, and Languages on behalf of the Minister of Secondary Education Professor Nalova Lyonga, the event brought together high-level representatives from the education sector.
