Overview of the functions of the post
The UNESCO Regional Office for Southern Africa implements the strategic and programmatic vision of UNESCO Medium Term Strategy (C4) along with the Approved Programme and Budget (C5) for nine countries under the region. The Office is also responsible for coordinating UNESCO’s contribution and collaboration within the cooperative framework of regional United Nations Country Team (UNCT); with a particular focus in six countries where UNESCO is a Non-Resident Agency. The intern will assume a supportive role in the Regional Director’s Office under the direct supervision of the Coordination and Support Officer to support this work. Support areas will include the following.
Contribute to UNESCO’s increased visibility and participation in the United Nations Country Teams under regional office.
Support the coordination processes of the six(6) sectors of UNESCO and their participation in the UNCT’s Working Groups and other platforms.
Support UNESCO’s contribution to the CCA, the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) and other UN Strategic Documents
Support the monitoring of the UNESCO Country Strategy (UCS)
Assist with the drafting of reports, minutes and cooperation sheets.
Support UNESCO’s reporting responsibilities in UNINFO and DEVPromis.
Sit on directorate event organizing committees.
Support the office in managing the management information system.
Learning Objectives
The intern will acquire an understanding of the overall work of UNESCO and relevant experience in partnership building within an international and multicultural context and more specifically with other UN Agencies. The objectives will comprise:
Skills development: To learn and improve skills in writing, verbal communication, technology, teamwork, and leadership which adds value to UNESCO ROSA.
Skills Application: Apply critical thinking and problem- solving in constructing effective informative and persuasive messages for various internal and external UNESCO ROSA groups, including but not limited to employees, clients, and community members.
Personal Development: To develop self-confidence, assertiveness, and basic work habits of the Trainee.
Knowledge Application: Apply knowledge from the class to the practical world as it helps UNESCO ROSA achieve its strategic objectives.
The goal of the internship is to offer experience in a multicultural environment and enhance an understanding of UNESCO’ mandate and work as well as the United Nations System at large.
After the assignment, the intern should be able to:
Work independently and take initiate.
Develop professional rapport with UNESCO and other UN Staff as well as other partners.
Understand the context of global policy making in the UN system, UNCT participation, resource mobilization and the role of UNESCO in setting standards, facilitating knowledge exchange, and building institutional capacities.
Support the development of policy briefs, talking points, concept notes to support missions and other high-level visits.
Contribute meaningfully and proffer solutions and ideas to existing challenges.
Demonstrate diplomacy, coordination and engagement skills needed to convene partners towards a singular goal.
Understand administrative procedures and develop soft skills such as stakeholder management, problem-solving skills, interpersonal skills and work ethic within the UNESCO Competency Framework, in particular teamwork, flexibility, communication and client-oriented service mindset.
Develop critical-thinking skills through constructive engagement and exchange of information and ideas with partners and at UN Meetings.
Gain meaningfully from the professional experience and be able to pursue with a clear vision their own career aspiration.

Required Qualifications:
Education:
At the time of your application to the internship programme:
You are currently enrolled in a graduate programme in Social Sciences; preferably Monitoring and Evaluation, Development Studies, International Relations (Master’s degree, or equivalent, second university degree or higher).You have recently graduated with a Master’s degree (or second degree as defined above),12 months prior to the start of the internship.
Please note that candidates who have completed their full-time bachelor's degree but are not enrolled in a graduate programme are not eligible to apply.
Experience (if any): None required but previous internship experience in the development sector is an advantage.
Language skills: English, any other UN language is an advantage.
Competencies and skills: Creative, excellent communication skills, team player, writing and knowledge management skills.
Computer skills: You must have knowledge of computer systems and office-related software.
Team player: You should be able to work well in a team and adapt to an international working environment.
Communication skills: You should possess strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Benefits & Entitlements
Interns are entitled to 2.5 days of leave per month during their internship.

The UNESCO Internships Programme is open in January and July each year. Candidates shall apply to the vacancy that matches their personal expertise and domain. Candidates who successfully applied to the vacancy will stay in the intern talent pool and will be further assessed and selected by relevant hiring managers. The candidature will be valid for 6 months. Candidates who have been selected will be contacted directly by the relevant hiring manager. Those who were not selected for an internship in the current cycle will need to reapply to the internship programme when the new internship vacancies are released.
