Overview of the functions of the post
The UNESCO Regional Office for Southern Africa is housed in Harare, covering nine countries: Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), Zambia and Zimbabwe. Our programmes cover these nine countries in the areas of Education for sustainable development, Communication and Information systems, Science, technology and innovation, Culture and Heritage as well as human and social sciences; with a focus on the youth, women and minority groups. The regional office operates in a wider policy context, within the organization’s global policies, aligned with African regional and subregional policy frameworks, and dovetailing with national policies and planning mechanisms.
Within the Regional Directors office, the Development and Communications role is performed, aimed at improving the regional office visibility, branding and stakeholder engagement. The Directorate also coordinates all UN communication activities for the region.
The Communications Intern will directly work with and report to the Development and Communications Officer working closely with colleagues in the Director’s Office and supporting all UNESCO ROSA sectors and countries. Key responsibilities will include the following.
Contributing to the building of UNESCO ROSA’s visibility
Supporting the production of promotional and visibility material
Assisting with the profiling of UNESCO ROSA countries and sectors
Assisting with event coordination across UNESCO ROSA countries
Assisting with administrative support for the communications function
Contributing to the management of social media platforms and creating compelling content for all UNESCO ROSA sites and generation of articles for various platforms.
Learning Objectives
During the internship, there will be an opportunity to learn and support the overall work of the organisation’s mission covering all Sectors and the Director’s Office. The Intern will acquire an understanding of the overall work of UNESCO and relevant experience in communication within an international and multicultural context. The objectives will comprise:
Skills development: To learn and improve skills in writing, verbal communication, research, technology, teamwork, and leadership which adds value to UNESCO ROSA.
Skills Application: Apply critical thinking and problem- solving in constructing effective informative and persuasive messages for various internal and external UNESCO ROSA groups, including but not limited to employees, clients, and community members.
Personal Development: To develop self-confidence, assertiveness, and basic work habits of the Trainee.
Knowledge Application: Apply knowledge from the class to the practical world as it helps UNESCO ROSA achieve its strategic objectives.
After the assignment, the Intern should be able to:
Produce high quality and impact rich visibility and knowledge products.
Network professionally with UNESCO and other UN Staff as well as key organizational partners.
Write, review and edit professional and technical documents for international audiences.
Meaningfully gain skills that will enhance the career of the incumbent.

Required Qualifications
Education:
At the time of your application to the internship programme:
You are currently enrolled in a graduate programme in communication, media, multimedia, film making, advertising or English with Communication studies (Master’s degree, PhD, or equivalent, second university degree or higher)or; You have recently graduated with a Master’s degree or PhD (or second degree as defined above),12 months prior to the start of the internship.
Please note that candidates who have completed their full-time bachelor's degree but are not enrolled in a graduate programme are not eligible to apply.
Experience (if any): None required but previous internship experience in the development sector is an advantage.
Language skills: English, any other UN language is an advantage.
Competencies and skills: Creative, excellent communication skills, team player, writing, photography and multimedia.
Computer skills: You must have an excellent knowledge of computer systems and office-related software.
Team player: You should be able to work well in a team and adapt to an international working environment.
Communication skills: You should possess strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Benefits and Entitlements
Interns are entitled to 2.5 days of leave per month during their internship.
Selection and Recruitment Process
The UNESCO Internships Programme is open in January and July each year. Candidates shall apply to the vacancy that matches their personal expertise and domain. Candidates who successfully applied to the vacancy will stay in the intern talent pool and will be further assessed and selected by relevant hiring managers. The candidature will be valid for 6 months. Candidates who have been selected will be contacted directly by the relevant hiring manager. Those who were not selected for an internship in the current cycle will need to reapply to the internship programme when the new internship vacancies are released.
