Human society is in the midst of a fast-paced digitalization process, making an inclusive digital environment one of the key elements of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, at a time when most people are motivated and equipped to access to digital resources, barriers in people's skills and ability to use them, as well as the design and standards that do not take inclusivity into account, create new digital inequalities. Those barriers concern a number of factors such as Internet connectivity, user-friendliness, consumer convenience, the lack of knowledge-linking capacity and human-centered connectivity.
Particularly, persons with disabilities and many other minorities and marginalized groups are hindered from effectively accessing online resources. Not everyone is benefited from digitalization equally. Thus, to advance towards inclusive, equitable鈥痑nd鈥痵ustainable Knowledge鈥疭ocieties, it requires joint efforts and actions to enable access to information to all, create conceptual consensus and build multi-sectoral coordinated actions by all stakeholders.
The Information for All Programme (IFAP) is a unique UNESCO intergovernmental programme. It offers a platform for policy dialogue and cooperation, to build equitable, inclusive, and sustainable knowledge societies.
UNESCO and the Communication University of China will organize the International Seminar on Information and Communication Accessibility and Human Rights Protection, on occasion of the 2023 International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The International Seminar serves a joint action for implementing IFAP new Strategic Plan 2023-2029 which pays special attention to how knowledge societies are impacted by digital ecosystems reinforces its commitment to Universal Accessibility and the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities.
Seminar II 鈥淯niversal Accessibility and the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities: Global Perspective and International Best Practices鈥 will be held on Friday, December 1, 2023 15:00-18:30 (UTC+8) in a hybrid format, both in-person at the Communication University of China鈥檚 International Convention Center and virtually via Zoom.
