The First Regional Training in Nadi, Fiji to move the UNESCO-IOC Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme forward
Ms. Nisha, Director of the UNESCO Office for the Pacific States, formally welcomed the Group together with by Mr Sanaka Samarasinha, UN Resident Coordinator for the Republic of Fiji, who committed to call on the One UN Pacific family to support PICTs in making 100% of their at-risk communities Tsunami Ready by 2030.
The Assistant Director General of UNESCO and IOC Executive Secretary Dr Vladimir Ryabinin thanked the Fiji government for hosting the Regional Training, and called on the need to have professionals from relevant disciplines to engage in the Tsunami Ready Programme and call on them to become part of the Tsunami Programme of the UN Ocean Decade.
Representing the Fiji Government, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources (MLMR) Dr. Raijeli Taga remarked that this Regional Tsunami Ready Training for PICT is critical to the safety of the Pacific Island Member States and its People as it builds on the agreement of leaders at the Inaugural Pacific Islands Countries and Territories DRR Ministers Meeting held in Nadi, Fiji in 2022.
Tsunami Ready aims to strengthen a community鈥檚 capability to prepare for and respond to tsunamis. This week鈥檚 training shared the tools that countries can use to work with coastal communities progressing toward 鈥渕aking 100% of at-risk communities Tsunami Ready by 2030鈥, the UNESCO/IOC UN Ocean Decade Tsunami Programme target for the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
The training has been possible with the support of the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD), United States Agency for International Development (USAID), United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA), United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and Australian Humanitarian Partnership (AHP)/Plan International-Fiji.
The three-day Training is led by the International Tsunami Information Centre, which supports Member States of the IOC Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Pacific Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (PTWS), in collaboration with Indian Ocean Tsunami Information Centre (IOTIC) and The Pacific Community (SPC). The Training will be followed by the PTWS Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICT) Regional Working Group on Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System on 2n -3rd February 2023.
