Earth and biodiversity, my home for the present and for the future Generation

Transforming degraded lands in Burundi into thriving ecosystems through agroforestry, regenerative agriculture, and community-driven solutions.

Located at the heart of the Imbo region, the city of Bujumbura faces severe environmental challenges from deforestation, unsustainable land use, and climate change. Intense rains and poor land management lead to severe flooding, loss of biodiversity, and reduced agricultural productivity. The urban sprawl exacerbates these issues, with limited resources and knowledge to address environmental degradation. These challenges threaten livelihoods, infrastructure, and food security, leaving both rural and urban populations vulnerable.

This Perfect Village Communities’ initiative addresses these pressing problems by combining land and forest restoration techniques with community empowerment. Their approach brings together all urban and rural stakeholders by restoring degraded land through agroforestry and biodiversity planting, utilizing tree species that support regenerative agriculture. These species produce biofertilizers, animal feed, and litter while contributing to the development of organic farming systems. By creating value chains for food, fruit, and non-timber forest products, they provide sustainable income opportunities for local farmers. Their projects also implement carbon credit systems, allowing communities to monetize their environmental restoration efforts. Additionally, urban green spaces are enriched with medicinal plants and flowers, improving environmental health while enhancing city aesthetics.

Major impacts on the environment and communities

Since its inception, the project has restored over 5,000 hectares of degraded land, planted more than one million agroforestry species, fruits, and medicinal trees, and created 4,500 jobs. Collaborations with 3,500 farmers have resulted in a 20% increase in agricultural production, benefiting over 10,000 community members. Through education on climate change and sustainable practices, they empower communities to manage their resources effectively and restore the balance between urban and rural ecosystems. Looking ahead, they aim to expand restoration efforts, increase training opportunities, and create more sustainable income streams, ensuring a brighter, more resilient future for Bujumbura and its people.
