Director-General of UNESCO on her first official visit to Iceland
UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, is undertaking her first official visit to Iceland from 24 to 27 May 2014. The Director-General is expected to meet with the President of the Republic of Iceland, 脫lafur Ragnar Gr铆msson and explore further initiatives of cooperation notably in the field of climate change, the creative industries and linguistic diversity. Irina Bokova will participate in the 9th edition of the Language Resources and Evaluation Conference held under the patronage of UNESCO at the Harpa Conference and cultural Centre in Reykjavik. The Conference will take place in the presence of the former President of Iceland and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for multilingualism, Vigd铆s Finnbogad贸ttir.
During her visit, Irina Bokova is expected to meet with several members of the government, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson, and other ministers working in the fields of competence of the Organization. The Director-General will also visit the Vigd铆s Finnbogad贸ttir Institute of Foreign Languages and discuss the next step of the creation of the International Centre for Multilingualism and Intercultural Understanding for which UNESCO and Iceland signed an agreement in 2013. The Director-General will give a lecture at the University of Iceland entitled 鈥淔rom language to knowledge: how to mobilize our ultimate renewable resource?鈥 and will visit the Thingvellir National Park, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list 10 years ago.
