Director-General in Opening of ECOSOC High-level Segment in Geneva
UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, is in Geneva from 1 to 3 July to take part in the High-level Segment of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) substantive session, which will focus on a range of issues at the heart of the UN development agenda.
The High-level Segment is held this year under the theme 鈥淪cience, technology and innovation, and the potential of culture, for promoting sustainable development and achieving the Millennium Development Goals鈥.
The Director-General will speak in the Opening Session, in the presence of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the President of the ECOSOC, the President of the General Assembly, the Director-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Director-General on the European Organization for Nuclear Research.
In the framework of the High-level Segment, the Director-General will also chair two Ministerial Roundtables. The first, on 鈥淐ulture and innovation in the post-2015 development agenda鈥, will provide political leaders and experts with the opportunity to network and discuss ways of improving policy and action on linking culture to sustainable development. It will also explore the use of innovation, creativity and culture to expand opportunities for inclusive economic growth, job creation, social cohesion, and partnerships among a wide range of actors.
The second Ministerial Roundtable, co-organized by UNESCO and the International Social Science Council (ISSC) is entitled 鈥淪cience, Technology and Innovation (STI) for Global Sustainability鈥. It will provide an opportunity for UNESCO and ISSC to engage participants on priority issues concerning STI with the intent of mobilizing collective action to support UNESCO鈥檚 efforts in strengthening the interface between science-policy and society, the linkage between STI policies and sustainable development, capacities of national STI systems, and international collaboration in science for the promotion of peace and technology transfer.
In addition, the Director-General will take part in a Side Event organized by UNESCO, CERN, ITU and the International Federation of University Women (IFUW) on the role of women in science.
