The Dhaka Declaration
The International Conference on Girls鈥 and Women鈥檚 Literacy and Education: 鈥淔oundation for Sustainable Development鈥 held in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on International Literacy Day, 2014, called for putting literacy and education first as key levers for sustainable development, with a particular focus on girls and women.
This was adopted through on 8 September 2014. Stressing the importance of a holistic approach to literacy and sustainable development, the Declaration outlines recommended measures to accelerate progress, and urges the integration of literacy and lifelong learning into the post-2015 development agenda, including the Sustainable Development Goals.
鈥淭he Dhaka Declaration should be taken to the forthcoming the World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development in Nagoya in November and the World Education Forum in the Republic of Korea in 2015鈥 said the UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, at the closing session of the conference. The event in Dhaka was organized by the Government of People鈥檚 Republic of Bangladesh in partnership with UNESCO in support of the United Nations Secretary General鈥檚 Global Education First Initiative (GEFI) on the occasion of International Literacy Day
