Development partners in Tanzania join forces for sustainable development through culture
The meeting aimed to bring together development partners, exchange ideas for collaboration, discuss priorities for the sector and develop an action plan for collaboration in 2021. Fourteen representatives from embassies and national cultural centers in Tanzania participated in the first quarterly meeting for 2021. During the meeting, it was noted that, the 74th United Nations General Assembly declared 2021 as the International Year of the Creative Economy for Sustainable Development.
2021 is also African Union鈥檚 (AU) Year of Arts, Culture and Heritage: Levers for Building the Africa We Want. 鈥淭he proposed theme of the year 2021 draws inspiration in the African Union Agenda 2063, as a shared strategic framework and blueprint for inclusive growth and sustainable Development鈥 said Mr. Dos Santos. 鈥淭his is the landmark of the contribution of culture in the economy and sustainable development,鈥 he added.
Members of the DPG-Culture will meet quarterly to exchange ideas for collaboration and coordinate actions towards contributing to the International year of Creative Economy for Sustainable Development and the AU year of Arts, Culture and Heritage. They plan to prioritize actions to support different populations, particularly in getting the youth involved in the creative economy through the arts and culture sector.
UNESCO shared the global report , which offers practical advice and adaptable measures on how to meet the most pressing needs of the artists and cultural professionals. These measures also contribute to long-term structural changes towards more resilient creative industries of tomorrow.
During the discussion, members of the Development Partners Group for Culture raised the issue of promotion of arts and cultural heritage, job creation for artists especially during the pandemic, restoration of heritage sites, inclusion of culture in green economy as well as intersection between cultural heritage and climate change and how its affecting communities. The DPG-Culture intends to meet with the national authorities responsible for arts and culture, for both mainland and Zanzibar, in order to discuss plans and priorities related to the sector and affirm the support of the development partners for its implementation.
Members of the group agreed to continue meeting quarterly in order to strengthen synergies for collaboration and ensure targeted support to the government鈥檚 priority areas for culture. The next meeting for the second quarter is planned for May 2021.
The Development Partners Group for Culture was established to support the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania in building its capacity to achieve the culture related goals as outlined in the national priorities. The DPG-Culture is meant to ensure improved coordination and articulation of Development Partners acting in the area of Culture. The main aim of the DPG-Culture is to support the Government to develop its potential in promoting the Culture sector and increase its capacities in the areas of (i) conservation and promotion of tangible heritage; (ii) safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage; (iv) promotion of the diversity of cultural expressions; (iv) promoting the role of culture in development, inter alia.
