At the celebration ceremony Prof. Shahbaz Khan claimed that the UNESCO Chair on Deep-time Digital Earth and Mineral Resources by China University of Geosciences and led by Academician Cheng Qiuming, was in line with the sustainable development goals of the United Nations and the medium-term strategy of UNESCO. Prof. Shahbaz Khan hoped that the Chair could rely on the State Key Laboratory of Geological Process and Mineral Resources and the School of Geoscience and Resources of China University of Geosciences, give full play to the unique discipline advantages of the school, provide an innovative data-driven platform for the basic research of mineral resources and their applications, and promote the prosperity and development of comprehensive research, education and international training in the fields of data science, mathematics and earth science.
In his speech, Secretary General Qin Changwei pointed out that the UNESCO Chair is an important cooperation network established by UNESCO in the field of higher education. Since its implementation in 1992, it has played an important role in promoting international cooperation, knowledge transformation, exchange and sharing of higher education among member states. The chair is also an important platform for Chinese universities to carry out cooperation with UNESCO in various professional fields. We hoped that the establishment of the chair will help Chinese universities play a role in global governance in relevant fields, education and scientific research cooperation and talent training, and provide important Chinese wisdom and experience.
Academician Sun Youhong, said in his speech that under the background of increasing pollution, rapid global warming, frequent extreme events and massive consumption of resources, earth science is of unprecedented importance to sustainable development, and will put forward innovative solutions and evolutionary blueprints.
