Call for applications: UNESCO's Remote Access to Laboratory Equipment Initiative

UNESCO calls on investigators and PhD holders from African institutes to apply to the Remote Access to Laboratory Equipment Initiative to access advanced research facilities for their projects. This call is launched in the context of the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development . It is supported by UNESCO, the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr), Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS), and the University of Lorraine and launched in partnership with Appui à la Formation Doctorale et à la Recherche en Afrique par des Mesures à Distance (AFRAMED).
About the initiative
Scientists in many developing countries struggle to access advanced lab equipment, widening the research gap with wealthier nations and fueling “brain drain.” UNESCO’s Remote Access to Laboratory Equipment Initiative tackles this challenge by providing remote access to sophisticated scientific equipment, along with training in their use. Aimed at nations facing economic or conflict-related hurdles, the initiative eases financial burdens, fosters global collaboration, and supports both research and education. Ultimately, the initiative seeks to empower talented minds to thrive in science in their countries.
Eligibility criteria
This call is open to Junior principal investigators and early career faculty (PhD holders) who hold a position in an African institute (under 45 years old). The applicants should be physicists, physical chemists, chemical physicists, or material scientists.
Selection process
Selection will be based on academic excellence and the quality of the submitted proposal.
