On 16-17 November 2024, the science popularization knowledge competition themed ¡°Conserving Biodiversity & Safeguarding National Parks¡± was organized in Baisha Li Ethnic Group Autonomous County, Hainan Province. This activity was jointly organized by UNESCO Regional Office for East Asia, Hainan Institute of National Parks (HINP), Hainan Provincial Department of Education, Forestry Department of Hainan Province, Hainan Provincial Committee of the Communist Youth League, Hainan Federation of Writers and Artists, and co-organized by Hainan Green Island Tropical Rainforest Public Welfare Foundation, Hainan Provincial Youth Activity Center and other local partners, under the guidance by Propaganda Department of Hainan Provincial Committee of the Communist Party. 

This activity is an important event under the framework of the project ¡°Accelerating Carbon Neutrality: Innovative Actions for Sustainable Development¡± supported by China Youth Development Foundation-Mercedes-Benz Star Fund. It is also a part of ¡°Rainforest and You¡± activity launched by the Hainan Provincial Committee and government. 

The science popularization knowledge competition focused on knowledge of national parks, the biodiversity of tropical rainforests, carbon peak, and carbon neutrality. It aims to enhance the awareness of ecosystem protection and scientific literacy of youth, and further lead them to participate in the biodiversity conservation and construction of Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park. 

57 students as well as 29 tutors and team leaders from 19 teams of local provincial universities participated in the semi-final which consisted of a written test and impromptu speeches. After an exciting competition, 6 teams entered the final contest. Finally, Hainan Normal University won the first prize; Hainan Health Vocational College and Hainan Tropical Ocean University won the second prize; Hainan University, Hainan College of Foreign Studies and Haikou University of Economics won the third prize. 

Along with that, the online knowledge competition and promotional activity were carried out from 4-15 November 2024, which attracted around 83,000 people to take part in the online quizzes from 19 local universities. Six universities of Hainan Vocational University, Sanya Aviation & Tourism College, Qiongtai Normal University, Hainan Vocational University of Science and Technology, Hainan College of Software Technology, and Hainan Medical University gained the award of excellent organizers for their good performance and results achieved in organizing and promoting the online knowledge competition.
