Harz - Braunschweiger Land - Ostfalen UNESCO Global Geopark
The Harz Braunschweiger Land UNESCO Global Geopark is located in Northern Germany and encloses the Harz Mountains and the northern situated Braunschweiger Land up to the Flechtingen Ridge The Harz Mountains are composed of Paleozoic sediments and magmatic rocks They have been extensively documented over the past 1000 years in historical accounts of mining and research The Braunschweiger LandOstfalen area is famous for its fossilrich sediments of the Mesozoic and Neozoic eras A unique landscape with numerous deposits iron ore brown coal salt oil came about here as a result of the elevation of salt structures The Classic Square Mile of Geology is an area at the Northern reaches of the Harz Mountains near the town of Goslar the Prussian Mile is equivalent to 753 km The essence of this area also called the Golden Square Mile consists of the close contact between the Variscan bedrock and the precipitous Mesozoic overlying rock with many reference outcrops This coexistence of the Palaeozoic Harz Mountains and the Mesozoic foreland describes the importance of the whole UNESCO Global Geopark perfectly

TERRA.vita UNESCO Global Geopark
TERRAvita UNESCO Global Geopark is located in northwestern Germany in the transitional zone between the northern lowlands and the northwestern hill country approximately 100 kilometers from the North Sea coast and some 35 kilometers east of the Dutch border The Geology of TERRAvita is characterized by an exceptionally complete record of the past 300 Million years of earth history Rocks of all geological periods ranging from the Upper Carboniferous age ca 300 million years old up to Holocene 10000 years old are accessible in many places Various types of sedimentary rocks represent the changes of environment that the area experienced during that span of time In the village Bad EssenBarkhausen in the eastern part of the Geopark dinosaur footprints can be found By the end of the Cretaceous period an anticline formed in the southern part of the UNESCO Global Geopark and the old layers were lifted up Now exposed to weathering the material was revealed and the relief formed following the resistance of the rock Finally ice age glaciers gave the territory the shape that we see today including a huge endmoraine structure in the northern part During several ice extensions older subsoil material mainly clay sediments of Tertiary age was dragged to hills while sand and gravel also accumulated Beside this unusual record of events some extraordinary sites are of international significance For example the Piesberg Mountain is well known as a source for carboniferous fossils of outstanding scientific value

Vulkaneifel UNESCO Global Geopark
Located in the middle of Central Europe at the northwestern part of the Rheinish Slate Mountains the rolling Eifel highlands are a hilly landscape with deep glacially carved valleys cut into old Devonian sediments 360415 million years old Volcanoes dot the landscape with 350 known eruption centers and give the area its name Vulkaneifel UNESCO Global Geopark Two volcanic phases created Vulkaneifel The first was active around 45 to 35 million years ago the second phase around a million years ago that ended with the most recent eruption the Ulmener Maar 10900 years ago Around 350 eruptions have been recorded in the Vulkaneifel of which around 270 were during the most recent phase The area is the international type locality of maar volcanoes In some craters bogs and lakes have formed while others remain dry Known as maar craters these bodies reveal a nearly uninterrupted stack of sediments dating back to 150000 years ago that provides data for the reconstruction of past climate vegetation and ecology Since the 1980s research focusing on the varve bearing sediments of the waterfilled maars as well as the drymaars made it possible to reconstruct an annual calendar for the last 23000 years with seasonal resolution Ongoing research in the maar sediments today allows a view back to some 130000 years ago Vulkaneifel is the most important climate archive for Middle Europe Similarly fossils found in 43 million years old sediments of Eckfeld Maar are of worldwide importance since they contained an archetypal horse and the oldest known honey bee The Vulkaneifel has attracted geoscientists for 200 years and many international research projects have been conducted here The Earth beneath the Vulkaneifel is still in motion In fact the surface of the area still uplifts by one millimeter per year rate

Thuringia Inselsberg - Drei Gleichen UNESCO Global Geopark
The geological history of the region starts with the amalgamation of the supercontinent Pangaea during the Variscan Orogeny and has a continuous record until the Breakup of Pangaea in the Late Triassic The variscan basement is exposed in the Ruhla Crystalline Complex RCC which is part of the Mid German Crystalline Rise and composed of mid to high degree metamorphic rocks During the Upper Permian the RCC formed a small island in the Zechstein sea surrounded by reefs These bildups were recognised as fossil reefs in the early 19th century some decades before LYELL 1841 and Murchinson 1847 recognised fossil reefs in the Silurian of northern Europe The Thuringian Forest Mountain Basin TFMB is an intramontane basin filled with a 4500 m thick sequence of Late Carboniferous and Early Permian terrestrial sediments and volcanic rocks The sequence is well exposed in the mountainous region and serves as reference section of the Lower Permian in Europe The TFMB has an extraordinary fossil record and a long research history dating back more than 300 years ago It is the birthplace of scientific palaeobotany and plays a special role in the research of Palaeozoic tetrapod fossils and their ichnology The famed Early Permian Bromacker locality is one of the most significant fossil sites for early terrestrial tetrapods The combination of a spectacular ichnofossil site with an outstanding site for skeletal remains is unique in the world The youngest rocks Triassic to Lower Jurassic are exposed in the Drei Gleichen area where Cretaceous inversion tectonics has formed a landscape with remarkable morphological features like the colourful badlands The region has some stratigraphic type localities of European significance and the only outcrop of the TriassicJurassic boundary in Central Germany
