Regional follow-up to SDG 4

Following a lengthy process led and managed by Member States at the General Assembly of the United Nations, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted in September 2015. This agenda, noted for the comprehensiveness of its 17 objectives and its universal character, represented, particularly through Sustainable Development Goal 4, a broad agreement of member states for inclusive, equitable, and quality education, and to promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

Thus, the SDG 4-Education 2030 Agenda sets targets ranging from early childhood to adulthood, covering diverse topics such as literacy, relevant and effective learning, skills and competencies for work, technical and vocational education and training, sustainable development, and global citizenship.

The UNESCO Multisectoral Regional Office in Santiago, in its role as the Executive Secretariat of the Regional Coordination Mechanism for SDG 4, oversees progress in achieving the educational goals of the SDG4/E2030 Agenda in Latin America and the Caribbean and monitors educational trends in the region. This monitoring is carried out jointly and in coordination with the organizations participating in the SDG4 Regional Steering Committee (RSC), such as the UNICEF Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).
