Closing the project “Strengthening National Capacities in Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage in Sudan” - Webinar
On the 21st of December 2020 the UNESCO Khartoum Office in partnership with the Ministry of Culture in Sudan and National Council for Cultural Heritage and National Languages Development organized a webinar for closing the project Strengthening National Capacities in Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage in Sudan which was funded by the Abu Dhabi Department for Tourism and Culture the UAE and continued in 201820 ? About 35 other culture professionals attended the webinar including 13 worked from the UNESCOs premises representing the UNESCOs HQ UNESCO Cairo Office Sharjah Institute of Heritage UAE Sudanese states and Sudanese National Commission for Education Science and Culture The webinar was honoured by the participation of HE Dr Graham Abdelgadir the Undersecretary in the Ministry of Culture and Information HE Dr Asaad Abdelrahman the Secretary General of the National Council for Cultural Heritage and Local Languages Development and HE Dr Pavel Kroupkine UNESCO Representative to Sudan and other distinguished persons ? Starting webinar Dr Pavel Kroupkine the UNESCO Representative to Sudan briefed participants about main projects results About 200 Sudanese culture professionals from all Sudan were trained in UNESCO 2003 Convention on Intangible Cultural Heritage ICH 7 training sessions and Preparing ICH Safeguarding plans 6 training sessions Requesting International Assistance Documenting ICH element and Nominating ICH elements for international recognition From these 16 training sessions 10 5 pairs of first two trainings were organized out of the capital metropolis More than 50 of the training opportunities were consumed by women and more than 70 by people from outside of the bigger Khartoum The Sudanese ICH SubSector received 9 teams capable to work implementing the UNESCO 2003 Convention 6 of which are in states The Sudanese ICH SubSector collected 42 ICH elements for the Sudanese ICH Inventory nominated one Al Toub Al Sudani Sudanese national costume for women for inscription on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity for the 2021 cycle One more Sudanese ICH element Arabic calligraphy knowledge skills and practices was nominated by the group of countries and one more collective nomination Date palm knowledge skills traditions and practices was recognized internationally in 2019 The Sudanese ICH SubSector developed holistic Sudanese ICH Strategy for 202029 which reflects all needs in implementing UNESCO 2003 Convention in Sudan covering 14 Development Areas in i developing ICH SubSector ii further collecting information about Sudanese ICH elements and treating them accordingly iii promoting Sudanese ICH Heritage nationally and internationally iv supporting and coordinating ICH bearers developing relevant culture industries and v integrating ICH in education curricula ? Then Dr Akatsuki Takahashi the Culture Programme Specialist at UNESCO Cluster office in Cairo congratulated the success of the project and outlined the outcomes of the sister project in Egypt managed by the UNESCO Cairo Office where capacities were developed and in particular for the Nubian community in South Egypt Mr Rasul Samadouv the Project Manager from UNESCO HQ outlined satisfaction and willingness to continue support for safeguarding Sudanese ICH Dr Jaffar Osman Culture Assistant to the Secretary General for Sudanese National Commission for Education Science and Culture outlined Sudanese national support for ICH safeguarding ? Furthermore there was a presentation from Prof Ismail Al Fihail on the transformation of the Sudanese Heritage from being local to becoming internationally recognized Two documentaries were broadcasted one was about the implementation of the project and the other was about Sudanese Toub ? In his speech Dr Asaad Abdelrahman the Secretary General of National Council for Cultural Heritage and Local Languages Development which is the responsible entity for implementing the UNESCO 2003 Convention in Sudan overviewed achievements and thanked all partners who contributed to success of the project ? ? The webinar was addressed by HE Dr Graham Abdelgadir the Undersecretary in the Ministry of Culture and Information who outlined plan to complete all regulatory frameworks for safeguarding cultural heritage in Sudan as this shall ensure unity societies cohesion and sustainable development He mentioned that this project is in line with recent positive news for Sudan including peace agreement removing Sudan from terror lists leading for Sudan to be proud to be proud of its culture history and civilization He outlined willingness to work with states higher education institutions and alliance countries for continuing the inventorying of living heritage for ensuring citizenship based on social peace within current country strategy for peace and better international relations Finally he appreciated the projects efforts made including in training program ICH inventorying ICH Strategy development He also appreciated partner countries that supported the Sudans efforts in implementing UNESCO 2003 Convention which was ratified by Sudan in 2008

Reviewing the Sudanese Heritage: Natural Sites 1
On 23 December 2020 the UNESCO Khartoum office Sudanese National Commission for Education Science and Culture NatCom and General Administration for Wildlife Conservation in Sudan organized an Expert Meeting for reviewing the list of Sudanese Heritage which is a national basement for the World Heritage and has to be maintained in accordance with the UNESCO 1972 Convention The meeting targeted the natural part of the list It took place on the premises of General Administration for Wildlife Conservation and attended by 24 experts including 8 women Mr Abdullah Khalil the General Director of the General Administration for Wildlife Conservation in Sudan and Ms Wafaa Sidahmed the Secretary General of the Sudanese NatCom led the event ? In the opening session Mr Abdullah Khalil welcomed the experts spoke about the importance of natural heritage sites their protection and transfer to future generations He appreciated the efforts made by all partners working for safeguarding the Sudanese heritage Ms Wafaa Sidahmed thanked the? General Administration for Wildlife Conservation for preserving natural sites in general and hosting the activity in particular She explained the necessity of periodical reviewing the Sudanese Heritage List and the criteria for selecting places

Signing the Country Agreement for the Project “Making School Inclusive 2”
On 14 September 2020 the Sudanese Ministry of Education MoE and UNESCO signed the Agreement for supporting the 2nd phase of the project Making Schools Inclusive funded by the UN Partnership for Promoting Rights of People with Disabilities UNPRPD The ceremony took place in the Ministry of Education the Office of the Undersecretary and was honored by HE Ms Tumadur El Tiraifi the Undersecretary in the MoE HE Mr Pavel Kroupkine the UNESCO Representative to Sudan HE Mr Gianluigi Vassallo the Ambassador of Italy to Sudan HE Mr Alfonso Herrero the Deputy Head of Spanish Mission to Sudan Ms Faiza Ahmed the Director of the Special Needs Department in MoE and other distinguished people ? The ceremony started with exchange of information about different aspects of help to Sudanese with disabilities where the participants were involved HE Mr Gianluigi Vassallo and HE Mr Alfonso Herrero representing cochairs of the Group of Friends of Sudanese with Disabilities expressed their appreciation for the starting project Amb Vassallo briefed participant about other Italian initiatives for people with disabilities in Sudan one of which exactly links with supporting the Special Needs Department in its strategic activities Mr Aiman Badri the project manager explained the project which aim to further increasing an accessibility of Sudanese schools for children with disabilities via delivering training materials for relevant teacher assistants in schools adjusted curricula for the steps 13 resource boxes and pilot all these in Khartoum and Nyala Dr Tumadur El Tiraifi expressed her gratitude to all supporters for educating children with disabilities and encouraged the participants to make more in Sudan
