We need to take action responsibly based on the understanding that what we do today can have implications for the lives of people and the planet in the future. Education for Sustainable Development empowers people to change their thoughts and work towards a sustainable future.

Education for Sustainable Development means including key sustainable development issues in teaching and learning. It requires far-reaching changes in the way education is often practised today. This educational effort will encourage changes in behaviour that will create a more sustainable future in terms of environmental integrity, economic viability, and just society for present and future generations. It represents a new vision of education. It is a concept that helps people of all ages better understand the world in which they live.

To transform lives and ensure the development and achievement of all the other Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), UNESCO offers subsidies to public policymakers and managers to integrate the SDGs into curricular content in an unprecedented and pioneering way. With this, UNESCO develops pedagogical materials, courses, educational instruments and publications to promote Education for Sustainable Development training for managers, teachers and students in schools and teaching networks.

Education for Sustainable Development at School

Children and young people must be protagonists in changing lifestyles, contributing to creating a more responsible and sustainable culture.

UNESCO in Brazil and the Ministry of Education (MEC) came together to produce an unprecedented series of pedagogical materials to disseminate Education for Sustainable Development (EDS) and the 2030 Agenda for students in the early years of elementary school, the age group for which there are few educational materials on the topic.
